Hole in one - who pays?

When I got mine on quite a famous par 3 on an Alister Mackenzie designed course ;) I got them in for my 8 mates that were playing together and offered to others that were in the club house at the time, but there were not many in and only a couple took me up so I stuck a bit in the charity collection on the bar.
Fortunately the clubhouse at Augusta is never that busy ;)

I really don't get all this whinging about the cost. It's a very rare occurrence for most people, enjoy the moment and celebrate. If you can't afford to buy a full round of drinks then fair enough I get that but it doesn't cost a fortune to put a bottle on the end of the bar.

And playing Devils Advocate......I wonder how many people that say they would refuse to buy a drink for anyone would actually accept one from somebody else who got a HIO

I have been lucky and had a few hole in one's over the years. The 1st one (and the most memorable) was whilst playing as a guest at a friends club, it was on the 8th hole and I was very excited to get it, this was tempered by the reception I got when back in the clubhouse, I offered everyone in the bar a drink but oddly most didn't accept and only a few accepted the offer and offered any form of congratulation I have to say it put a dampener on the experience for me as I would have liked to celebrate with everybody.

The others have all been at my home club and I suppose the bar bill ranged from about £30 up to about £200 which personally I am very happy to pay it is after all quite a rare occurrence and one I am very happy to celebrate.

'Enjoying' it doesn't equate to buying drinks for a room full of people I don't know, for me. When I celebrate my birthday or some other event, I don't buy drinks for everyone else in the pub.

As for the second part, if someone I didn't know offered me a drink for their hole-in-one, I would say thanks and congrats but no thanks.

I'm guessing you have a birthday every year but you may only get 1 HIO in your entire life (if you're lucky) so it's hardly the same thing.

I was merely questioning your use of the phrase 'celebrate', which in your mind seems to imply buying a shedload of drinks for strangers, whereas in my mind it does not. When I celebrate something, anything, I have a drink with my friends/family.

Whilst I would buy everyone a drink and be over the moon, have to say it is a bit strange to just randomly buy strangers/people drinks for anything (HIO or winning the lottery, both which may only happen once or never or more than once;))

You seem to play a lot of nomadic golf so I guess the clubhouse would be full of strangers but I'm a member of a club so the people in the bar would not be strangers to me. Many of them have bought me drinks when they've had one so I would certainly return the favour if I got lucky.

Each to their own, however if I am lucky enough to score another HIO I will be delighted to offer friends, PP's and yes strangers a celebratory drink in line with what I would consider a tradition worth preserving.

That's fair enough if you've partaken in a drink at their expense in the past, of course. I know a lot of the members at our club now, but I wouldn't consider them all friends per se.

I had one a few years ago and was advised after not to bother buying anything. It was at an away course with a society of around 30 people so it would have got stupidly expensive had I got everyone a drink.
At my home course the general theme seems to be a bottle of spirit is bought and put behind the bar for everyone to have a nip.

To be honest - I rather struggle with the very idea and hence the OP question that someone other than the lucky golfer who nailed it might pay. A hole-in-one involves a huge amount of luck (as well as the skill involved in hitting it in the direction of the green) and we as individuals should simply celebrate that piece of luck (at my place that is simply a bottle of Scottish grog on the bar for whoever, and drinks for anyone actually playing with the lucky golfer). 45 years of playing and never having had one I would celebrate mightily :)

Put a bottle on the bar at my place when I had one there which, IMO, is a good way of doing it.

Had one at Bearwood on a H4H trip and bought drinks for everyone who was playing with us (although only 2/3 groups iirc so didn’t cost much)

Based on Murph's nervousness about a hole in one at Sunningdale and my comment about H4H not being an ideal venue to get one either, has there been a hole in one at any forum event yet?
Tell them it was 3 off the tee :D
In a comp at my mine the club give you £30 and a Hugo Boss watch but only at the nominated hole.
Mine wasn't in a comp but i still bought everyone in the bar a drink, all 6 of them .
My mates bought me a Hugo Boss watch from the pound shop

Came within a ball roll of my first on Sunday in one of our board competitions. Unfortunately I couldn't stick around afterwards (I was in the 2nd group out) as I had a family function and had to get home, but I would've just loaded up my bar card and asked the bar steward to get all those who had played in the comp a drink as they came in. Fortunately my golf insurance covers HIO and bar tabs so would've been able to claim it back.

Cannot see the problem with buying a drink for people in the clubhouse - or putting a bottles on the bar - if I ever get one.

Its the Hole in One club which give the Hugo Boss watch out. Has to be in a comp as you say and you'll be affiliated to HDID

Its a nice watch, comes with a HIO strap and the watch itself has it on the back too. Worthwhile prize :-)

Yeah, next time  I'll make sure it's at the correct hole and in an official comp :ROFLMAO:

Do you buy cream cakes for everyone in the office when it's your birthday?

I did have to begrudgingly do that last year when people found out when my birthday was, yes. I will add though that buying a couple of boxes of cakes only cost me like £15, considerably less than a roomful of alcoholic beverages.

A bottle of cheap scotch costs around £15, that's all we put on the bar. They take one out of stock and you just replace it next time you go in the bar.
