I have had 3 hio, and it gets less special. I still keep the ball though.

When some one finds out you play golf, and they know nothing about golf, the question they will always ask is if you have had a hole in one. Not what's your pb, handicap, longest drive etc.

So having a HIO is good to show off to people who know nothing about golf? ;)

A bit like the pair of questions I often get asked! What's your handicap? 6! What does that mean then? Well.......!

Personally having achieved neither I'd get more pride from a 1 under par round as I'd see that as having control of the ball for 4hours - One of my biggest 'fears' is the day the HIO finally happens I'll have had a dreadful ball striking day and won't break 100!

500 yards, downhill par 5, drove the green :whistle:

More people have had HIO's than driven a par 5 ;)

I could say does it really matter what you shot for that one day if you got a hole in 1? Would you really go home deflated if you got a hole in one if you played above your handicap?

Jeez everyone, lighten up, carpe diem as they say. Get a hole in 1, take the congratulations of everyone, feel like a King for a few hours, enjoy the attention, buy a few drinks, tick it off the list then worry about your handicap or score afterwards.

Not saying I lose sleep over it or wake up at 3 in the morning in a cold sweat or anything, but would you really want be "see that guy over there? shot 113 with a hole in one!"

Don't get me wrong I'd love to have a hole in one before I get to the great fairway bunker in the sky but I'd prefer that gross score!

P.S. I've never been scratch club champ... bridesmaid 3 times;)
 
I think that a HIO is a pretty fantastic thing and in golf relates to just about the most recognised achievement by an individual.

As a golfer I know that a sub par round should be even better but I doubt that I will ever have one. Not had a HIO yet but I try at least 4 times a round and have come pretty close on lots of occasions - the heart starts thumping every time it gets even close to the hole.

Now if you asked a memeber of the non playing public what was a great golf achievement I doubt many would say sub par - most would go for HIO - it stands out.

If I ever do get one you will find me smiling for weeks afterwards - yes its a big thing!!

The way I played on the day I got mine that described me perfectly;) But strangely enough no one in the club house congratulating me was really interested in what gross I shot. And believe you me, the hole in one more than took away the pain of a bad round.
 
Surely a fairer question would be what would prefer; a HIO versus an albatross on a par 5? I think I'd still want the HIO over that as everyone knows what a HIO is about even if it was from 120 yards simple par 3 versus 220 yards from the semi rough of the par 5.
 
The thing that would impress me more than hio,is to see one of the "big boys" on this forum drive a par 5 and can't find his ball because of all the BS,I'd pay to see that,do you have to rain on his parade.

But the HIO counts 2 under par and the Albatross 3 under so the Albatross must be a harder thing to achieve.

I'd love another HIO, I really would.
But it counts for the same, in scoring terms, as an Eagle on a Par 5 - something that, and I'm not bragging here (well maybe a bit), I've probably done 20+ times since I started playing. Probably 6 or 7 have been hole-outs from 120 + but at the end of the round they count the same as a HIO or 2 on a Par 4...

There is a perceived difference but in reality there isn't.
 
Never had one so not overly bothered. May well change my mind if I change that but I'd rather have a low score and a handicap cut than one flukey shot amidst a decidedly average round and another 0.1 back
 
To all of the above posts I would add shooting your age or better. For most of you it is a goal for the future. For me a par round and my age is two months away and a hole in one to go with it would be nice but then pigs can fly on all counts.
On the OP I would love to get my first hole in one. It is a bit special.
Are there any statistics for amateurs scoring holes in one, scoring albatrosses, breaking par and shooting there age per annum?
