Reading the post about the guy getting a hole in one got me thinking and not wanting to urinate on his carnival I thought I'd start a new thread.

Am I the only one who doesn't see what all the fuss is about? Alright, it's a rare beast but it is essentially a lucky shot isn't it? Of all the things I'd like to achieve in golf, a hole in one has never been one of them.

I would happily go my whole golfing life and never get one.

A sub par round, now that would be something to treasure and be worth buying the drinks for.

id definatly swop the hole in one i had for a sub par round ,thats my aim in golf , its stil an amazing feeling when it goes in tho .. hard to slow the heart rate down for the next hole or two tho

is it all that ? prob not but its still great feeling ha

a hole in one is all that, think about the point of golf is to get in the hole in the least amount of times. whats the least that you can do it in ONE. so it is all that for me

Not much point if you take 10's and 12's for all the other holes though. I'd rather have the sub par round than 1 fluke shot.

Not a fair contest. Sub par wins.

However, a hole in one is still awesome! Also, -2 on one hole is going to help you get 'sub-par'!

Oh, and when was the last time you saw a pro jumping up and down for a sub par round?! (not including winning an event obviously).

Think that I might be "the guy" you are referring to?

If so, please call me Davie:cheers:

I have never said that scoring a hole in one would ever be in my targets during a round and it was not something that I thought I would have to (or be able to) do before I die.

The thought of shooting a sub par round is the thought that keeps me coming back for more every time.

I shot a pb of 85 a few weeks ago and I tell you what it felt bloody great.

There is without a large amount of sheer luck in acing out. Don't get me wrong the PW I hit was a cracker, but it was not half as pretty as the 6 iron I put onto the middle of the green a few holes previously.

Long and short of it is that I agree a sub par round is something very, very special and would better anything else I will do on a course.

But let me tell you, shooting a oner is a bloody close second! :-)

No need to piss on my chips though ;-)

Absolutely no problem pal

On other forums I use the :-) sign automatically turns into a :) when you submit.

Obviously this one does not, hence why it was camouflaged on the end of my sentence.

Having seen the joy an ace brings to players then yes it is all that.
First one I witnessed was by an old guy who played off 22, he duffed a tee shot with a hybrid on a 100 yard hole and it ran up the fairway, between two bunkers and straight into the hole. I stood there saying "That's in!" and he didn't believe me until we got to the hole and it was sitting in the bottom of the cup. They look of joy on his face was brilliant.
The last one was during our 72 hole charity challenge and on the 18 of the first round Phil, our club pro, got one. He's had four now and looked just as chuffed as the old chap.
I've got more hope of winning the lottery than I have of shooting a sub par round so I'd take an ace any day.

It's nice but it's not the be all and end all of my golfing career.
Par or sub-par rounds are what do it for me.

Mind you if I get one the whole World is gonna hear about it.

You see this is the thing for me. Yes it was nice for the old fella to get a HIO but duffing a shot along the ground kind of says it all for me. I have 2 mates who have HIO, both play about twice a year and neither ball went more than 15ft off the floor. One even rolled through a bunker before going in.

I'm sure getting one is a great moment, I have actually witnessed two this year and a few before and seen the reaction of people and though it may not seem it, I am actually pleased for them, but at the end of the day, it is still a lucky shot.

Replace sub-par with 59 for the pro and and you might have a different outcome. I guess it's all about expectation

IMO a hole in one isn't all that.

I fluked one at my old course it was the scabbiest thinned 6 iron I've ever hit. It ran done hill and was lucky to hit the flag and drop because it was headed for tiger country. I was more embarrassed than elated, i'd take a sub par round over that anyday.
