Just booked a weeks holiday up near Dornoch later in the summer. Already decided to treat myself to a round at Royal Dornoch but am looking for some other cheaper options as well.

Looks like Brora, Golspie, Fortrose & Rosemarkie are all pretty nearby, any recommendations?

Brora is great fun, Dornoch Struie is a decent enough course beside the championship one. Fortrose is short but fun.

Tain is a must play as well.
the only others in that area are Bonar bridge and Tarbut both 9 hole courses.
Play both the dornoch courses, the struie is a very good test.
Broro, a must play a gps is handy as there are no distance markers.
Fortrose, short but always windy with very fast small greens.
Golspie, mixture of parkland, heathland and links.

If you want a game at Tain or Nairn pm me nearer the time and i'll sign you on.

Nairn is a super course if it's within travelling distance.

I agree, Nairn is as good (if not better) than Royal Dornock.

Tain is OK, but rather short. I was disappointed to be honest.

If you fancy a drive of an hour or so along the coast heading East - Old Morray is stunning.

How's 6500 yards short, did you play off the ladies tee's?

Well I just remember it being short. The most disappointing finishing holes of any course I have played. A short par 4 on 15, 16 and 17 easy par 3's and a drivable par 4 on 18. All 4 holes with high stroke indexes.

I knew it was designed by Tom Morris and was very much looking forward to playing it on a tour of the area, but my honest opinion was - it was disapointing. Nairn, Dornoch, Nairn of Dunbar and Old Moray (both courses) were far better courses. Just my view. You do not have to agree, that's the point of a forum discussion.

FYI the course is 6,400 yards from the whtes which as a visitor we were not allowed to play from. The club insisted we played from the yellows (not my choice) and it is only 6,100 yards from those. as I said, a short course.

I know how long the course is thanks I'm a member and play there most weeks. As far as i'm aware visitors can play from the whites if they ask.

You must have played it when there was no wind and most of the time the closing holes are played into wind and sometimes its up 4 or five clubs.

Do you mean to tell me you can drive 370 yards cos thats what the 18th is off the yellow.

You must be some golfer if you thought it was easy as most medal rounds the css 72 (par 70) and this weekend it was 75.

I played Tain last September and I thought the course was excellent and in really good nick. I didnt think it was short but then again my course is only 4804 yards. Despite many a visit to the gorse and trees I managed to play to my handicap. I havent played any of the other courses mentioned but I would certainly recommend Tain.
