I never used to keep a headcover on my driver, as it was out on nearly every hole, so I kept the 3 and 5 snuggled up and protected. It's safe to have one uncovered, so they don't bang around. But, now I have a "big dog" driver (which gets less use) I've gone back to having the 3 wood as the uncovered choice.

If you have a really expensive driver or fairway wood, it's a good idea to put a cheap inconspicuous headcover on it when you leave your bag un-attended. That way the odd opportunist thief won't be tempted.

You really should try not to leave your bag unattended, it looks bad on the insurance claim form.

I like a full set of head covers. What are you going to do with the 1/2 second saved removing it. 14 times a round, ooh, you just saved 7 seconds in your lifetime to use on something else.

I'm with Murph on this one. Like all my woods covered. Don't mind whether its the official covers or a 3rd party one. General rule of thumb is I use the one that came with club until its done, then buy something else to cover it after. Assuming I have not changed them all by then!

I now always put the cover back on my woods having chipped the top of my driver when it banged against another club when going over a bump in a buggy

I think I've been misunderstood here. When you are playing a round your bag is obviously not un-attended and you will be using your proper headcovers, but certainly at my Club, many golfers park their trollies outside the clubhouse and go in for a drink after their round. It is at that time that we have had opportunist thieves simply walking past and lifting an expensive club from a bag, going to their car, and driving away. It is therefore a good idea to have and old headcover in your bag and simply slip this on your expensive club instead of advertising the fact that you have something worth nicking. I don't know of any Club that doesn't have a group of trollies/bags left lying around on the paths etc. on busy days. It is obviously better not to leave your clubs un-attended in the first place.

I agree with your sentiment...it's not the 1/2 second to get it off, it's the 2 minutes to get it back in again. :)

Um, sounds a bit like...(rude)....
