• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

Grrrr... what irritates you on the golf course?

Well pitchmarks, divots and un-raked bunkers are my normal one's that seem to upset most people.
But another one is the course's that have 3 bunkers around the green and only one rake which you have to go and find, which is normally in the one furthest away.

The thing that has wound me up the most recently was my playing partner a couple of weeks ago. He was having a shocker but I was playing quite well. On 2 occasions he picked up his ball half way along the hole and walked off to the next tee, leaving me to finish on my own. Any time I have ever had a shocking hole and have felt the need to pick up I always walk the rest of the hole with him and tend flag etc.

Not sure why everyone gets so upset over pitchmarks. Yes they are poor show, but they don't affect my game, like slow play does. We don't get many, but whenever i get on the green i repair mine first and then any others i can see. If everyone repaired their own and one other they would be all gone pretty quickly. Sometimes people just miss them, not intentionally, and i am not going to worry about it, and let it affect me.

Divots not replaced seems to cause a lot of irritation as well, but as the birds like to pull them up, it is not necessarily the golfers fault. Not losing sleep over that one either.

Think i must be one of the more chilled out golfers judging by some of the rants on here. ;)

Pitch marks.

And what makes it even worse this year is that ALL members got a pitch mark repair tool with their membership information and bag tags this year.

If anything I think the greens are worse!!!

There is one act on my course that really gets me. There is a hole where you have to walk back down a hill to the next tee so what to people do, leave their bags beside the green where they can easily be hit and incur a penalty. Does not take much to move them away from the green.

are you playing back to that green? I thought you would only incur a penalty if you hit your own or your partner/groups gear.

Pitchmarks are a pet hate as it spoils the look and roll of the most manicured part of the course.
I also dislike seeing them on the fringes and aprons of greens.
alcohol tins and bottles, whether in the bin or on the course anywhere, you dont see any other outdoor sport needing the consumption of alcohol to get you through the experience, why golf?
Men that wear shirts while golfing? did they really not have a single polo shirt?

You can tell a lot about a man when you see him stood on a green card in hand and pointing to each and every one of his 11 shots while arguing that the airshot didnt count then wandering back 40 paces to get his pull along trolley with pencil bag attached. I call them hackers.

Pitchmarks
Divots
Litter
People taking over the practice green because they want to do some ridiculous drill they've seen in Todays Golfer which involves building a series of ramps or some other tosh
Poor signage
Dropping the flag on the green
Miserable, unwelcoming staff
Players losing their temper and begaving like a 3 year old because they've hit a bad shot. Get over it or play another game
Spitting

I dont mind slow players one bit, if they dont let me through thats when we're going to have issues!

People not repairing pitchmarks annoys me but in fairness I really look for mine sometimes and cant find it! Although to be fair I do always repair the ones I see, (which probably annoys my playing partners! haha)

My biggest irritation though is bullies! generally at my club its senior members who dont like us "young" players booking tee times before them on a sunday morning and get really arsey and even swore and get a bit aggressive towards me and my group! TBH I dont think they'll be doing it again as they were "offered out" and then told to F@@K off by myself!
But yeh, people throwing their weight around on the course and in life in general are my biggest irritation!

OH yeh! AND people behind playing shots while you are in range. I can handle once, maybe even twice if there's a shout, but not 3 times....... HELL NO!!! :) :) :D

Pitchmarks. Can't understand how someone can say it doesn't affect them. Try putting over the remnanats of old ones and see what it does to the line and speed

Litter. Hate to see any course blighted by cans, sweet wrappers etc. There are normally bins on most tees (or very couple) and you have a dirty big bag you can put them back into

Ignorance. People talking as you are playing, walking out as you are hitting, not raking bunkers

Slow play. I'm not a clock watcher and for me a 4 hour round is perfectly fine (providing it isn't perishing or raining) but I hate groups standing on the green looking back and actually tracking how many shots they took to plot their way down and then marking the card. Then they've realised the bag is on the other side of the green

Bad etiquette. No need for it. If you aren't sure, ask. Don't stand in my eyeline as I swing or directly down my line beyond the hole as I putt. If you can't find the ball quickly either walk on (friendly or stableford), hit your provisional or in an ideal world call the guys behind through

Bandits. Not the guys that have a club handicap and enter every comp and suddenly hit a purple patch and win a few events or take the Saturday morning money. These are the guys that have "a well protected figure" and are rarely seen unless its a big event. They usually do enough to keep the card active over 12 months but usually play somewhere else and are much lower than their mark suggests. Roll up, clean up, clear off. Rarely venture into the bar and only spotted again at prizegiving

Obviously they will affect a putt Homer. You are allowed to repair the ones on your line though, and as they are rare on our greens i don't let them affect me personally. That is what i meant, and i have a lot more excuses for missing a putt than a pitchmark. ;)

Duffed chips, 3 putts and a big slice into the trees I try not to let anything get on my nerves too much as it does not help anything. I did get annoyed one week when I was held up on a tee with a 3 ball up ahead and the two ball behind asked if they could play through me? I don't like to see any litter but mostly it is my own mistakes that irritate me but I am working on it.

People who wear their cap on back to front.
People who play in joggers, trainers and vests.
People who don't clean their golf shoes from one week to the next.
Scruffy gits.
Blokes with pony tails.
Ray Taylor (he won't stop gassing when somebody is about to play their shot)
Arrisholes who don't say "good morning" back to you.
The knob in the fourball in front with "the attitude" who keeps giving you evil looks.

Oh and mats. I fecking hate 'em

In terms of the condition of the course most already listed but here goes

Unraked bunkers
Worn tees where the markers haven't been moved for a week
Mats
Temp tees on unmown bits of fairway
Lack of GUR signs when it is clearly GUR
Pitchmarks
No or broken bunker rakes
No sand in bunkers
Litter
Moving the hole so my approach lands right next to where it was yesterday :D

In terms of players, again most already mentioned but for what it's worth here's a few of mine

People who think that your golf is incidental to your main purpose which is to listen to them talk about their golf.
Thoughtless slow play (leaving trolleys by wrong side of green, counting score on green, taking ages to putt out and clear green, wannabes who take 5 very deliberate practice swings after hitting their shot, because it landed on the wrong part of the green).
People who are sure they know the rules but don't.
People with rubbish swings and cruddy gear who shoot lower than me gross :D

i absolutely hate people that dont repair divots and pitch marks come on there not that hard to see in a round i bet i roughly repair 3 pitchmarks per hole and put in 3-4 divots and also play with guys that unless i throw them back the divot they wont do ot
