• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

Grrrr... what irritates you on the golf course?

Don't the mats help with your fat iron shots Smiffy ?

I don't fat them anymore Rich.
I have altered my stance, and have spent hours perfecting a much wider, sweeping take away.
Get myself into a perfect position at the top and then start my downswing with a deft flick of the right hip.
I find it is working wonders.
You'll see next week mate

Love the idea of your 'deft flick of the right hip'. I assume it is nothing like my lurch at the ball then ?

People marking scorecards whilst still on the green
No water in the ball cleaning thingy's (what are they actually called)
Slooooooow play
Litter
My ball deciding to go left on one shot then right the next!!!
Oh yeah and wind.....there is just no need!

:-)

Club or tantrum throwers.

Nothing worse than walking along while clubs are flying around and folk losing their temper, just no need. We're all sh*t at the game really, just different levels of sh*t so why are some surprised that they dont hit evrry shot perfectly!?

What irritates me ?

First thing that springs to mind is people who have the longest , most tedious preshot routines ever invented. FFS just get on with it will you, you arent playing golf for a living.

I'm with Mike on the not putting the flag back in properly , its very irritating indeed. Followed a bloke last week who was playing with his son and twice in those 9 holes the flag was laying diagonally in the hole taking a nice gouge out of the side of the cup. Ordinarilly I would have councilled him but it was too nice an afternoon to spoil it with confrontation issues.

Loud laddish behaviour from people on other holes with no respect for anyone else playing the course.

Seniors who think that they've got a right to block book the same tee time every weekend morning when they pay the same subscriptions as everyone else. There are other people who'd like to play before 0900 on a Sunday you knobs

People with h/cs that are so wrong its ridiculous and then make every excuse under the sun when they run off with all the prizes after another 45 points

Preshot routines for me as well - I call it "having a golfing experience" and it rattles my cage something rotten. There's on younger guy at my place who takes nearly 2 minutes to hit a shot - 2 bleeding minutes! And that's after taking a week to choose his club!

Pitchmarks are an obvious one - we have so many you just get bored fixing them.

3 ft high rough at driving distances - why? You're going to look for it and you're not going to find it. Have rough by all means but surely 3-4 inches is enough?

Not knowing where the flag is on the green because it's hidden behind mounds. Sensible clubs have different colour flags, the ball on the flagstick or another method - we don't. One of the reasons I bought a Laser!

People who obviously don't play often and/or can't play trying to play at busy times. Everyone has to start somewhere but booking 9.32 on a Saturday morning isn't the best place.

Greenkeepers driving their mowers/trucks or whatever they are up the middle of the fairway to get to the green - go in the rough FFS!!

Work isn't going well today so you've asked this on a bad day:

1 - slow play
2 - people who rush around expecting those in front to rush as well.
3 - Unrepaired pitchmarks
4 - Unreplaced divots.
5 - Marking cards on the green after the whole group has putt out.
6 - leaving bags/trolleys at the front of the green.
7 - In foursomes when the non-driver walks up the fairway rather than walking & talking to the rest of the group.
8 - People who blame anything other than there crap swing for a bad shot (other players, other groups, the conditions, the course quality etc)
9 - Non-raking of bunkers
end of part 1.
you covered most of mine there mate wasnt brave enough to leave the women in. can i just add _(1) the hacker who insists on telling you what you are doing wrong in your game.. play your own ya muppet il ask if i want your opinion.. (2) IGNORANCE cant stand it.. your second point, these people really REALY REALY annoy me ,

People talking on mobile phones whilst on the course esp when phone rings and isn't on silent. I don't mind texting / checking the footie scores as long as it's done discreetly.

Unnecessary slow play / impatient golfers

Litter.

Rain / Snow.

Top of my list is slowness, whether that be pace of play itself, or overly long preshot routines, marking cards on the green, etc etc. Golf shouldnt be a rush, but it should be flowing, as soon as its stop/start ones own rhythm goes to pot.

Next on my list is those that wont keep still and quiet while another of their group is playing their shot. As I am stepping up to the ball to hit it I really dont want to hear about someone's holiday, or have to listen to them messing with clubs.

You would love Ray Taylor then. He is the worlds worst. He's chatting away while you are on the putting green or chipping, and as you stand on the tee addressing the ball you can see and hear him practice swinging right up until the moment you are just about to pull the trigger.
If I had a £ for every time I have told him to Sssh! it would pay for my membership at Highwoods.

Not much irritates me when I'm on the golf course but this gets to me, particularly when they are on your team!!!

People who can't be patient enough to wait to putt out sensibly. After putting up close they reach over everything so avoiding your line and flick the putt which misses then hit it in with the back of the putter, which misses. The tap it in but stub their putter and miss again for a 5 putt 9!!!! Just wait 30 seconds and you can tap it in in peace.

People who putt out first and don't go and get the pin ready to replace.
If I ever putt out first in my group, I'm the guy that replace the pin.
I hate putting out last and everyone walks off the green leaving the flag on the ground.

Why don't you just say....

"Smiffy I don't want to play with you again" :D

Not being let through, and not even being seen

I love how many people say "pitchmarks" but the amount of people who pick up the flag an then just throw it down on the green ! Am i the only one that lays it down or "catches" it on my foot to lay it down ?

Not the only one, I catch it on my foot and lower it down. Hate it when people just drop it down leaving a mark.
