• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

Grrrr... what irritates you on the golf course?

Gamesmanship.

Not banter with mates - everyone loves a bit of banter.

I get really p*ssed when people try hard to look for any way of putting someone off so they can win. Asking what handicap you are off.....Really!!! I need to talk to the comittee.

A while back I even had one which appeared in the rules section in GM in a recent issue. I asked someone if they wanted the flag out cos they were on the fringe and proceeded to remove it for him. He then putted on and claimed the hole becaues he had not asked for it to be removed.

My preference is that everyone has a great gamen and enjoys it - I would rather loose to someone playing a good game than someone looking for ways to put me or others off etc.

I left that club a while back

1. Slow play
2. Slow play
3. Slow play
4. Slow play
5. Pitchmarks
6. Unreplaced divots
7. Shouting that carries to everyone within 500yds
8. Slow play
9. Unraked bunkers
10. Pink tees and Orange golf balls, especially together :)

1. People who complain about the state of the greens when maintenence is being done (grading etc.) Its gotta be done so just accept it. Its what makes your greens so good in the summer.
2. The people who are mentioned above who then go out screw a 170 yard shot into the green and dont repair their pitch mark...!!!!!!! W*****S you want good greens then repair your pitch mark!!!!!!!

Most of the above, but the main one is talking when someone (it does not have to be me) is over their ball. For crying out loud! We have got about 4 hours of time to chat between shot, why do you have to talk now, just as the player is getting over the ball?

Selfish, Selfish, Selfish !!!

oh dear, (i'll apologise now) why did you have to start me off

PPl who hit a wayward shot onto your fairway yet walk right out & stand in front of you making you wait to hit yours so they can hit theirs first because theyre selfish PR***s & ignorant (especially if your already stood over your ball)

ppl standing on your line or right next to/on the edge of the hole (consider other ppl, might not be your group but other groups behind might have to putt over it)

ppl in bunkers making a waft with a club to rake it but not actually raking it properly or at all

other groups shouting and laughing loudly while you or your group are trying to hit a shot

greenkeepers getting in your way all the time (not just once or twice as they do have a job to do too)

ppl who miss a putt but spin on the ball of their feet to steer it in and damage the green

ppl who want you to help them look or watch for their ball and then never help anyone else (its just common courtesy)

i'll carry on later ;)

Pitchmarks or the idiots that make them and dont even look for them to repair them or try and do anything about it.

Choppers i am not talking low or high handicappers - people that play the game like they are a pro and try and dish out advice when they are clearly in no place to do so.

litter
pitch marks and unraked bunkers (and bunkers with no or broken rakes)
incorrect signage (including the f/m/b marker on the flag)
heaps of stuff still 'awaiting collection' a week later
buggies, and the users thereof
anyone who takes a trolley on the inside of the berm surrounding a green
stones in bunkers - ever heard of a sieve?

Work isn't going well today so you've asked this on a bad day:

1 - slow play
2 - people who rush around expecting those in front to rush as well.
3 - Unrepaired pitchmarks
4 - Unreplaced divots.
5 - Marking cards on the green after the whole group has putt out.
6 - leaving bags/trolleys at the front of the green.
7 - In foursomes when the non-driver walks up the fairway rather than walking & talking to the rest of the group.
8 - People who blame anything other than there crap swing for a bad shot (other players, other groups, the conditions, the course quality etc)
9 - Non-raking of bunkers
10 - Women
11 - Old men
12 - Old women
13 - Losing the winter league to juniors (I'm not bitter, honest ;))
14 - People who drive up to the course and have no thought for those currently playing as they fly by with the radio blasting out.

end of part 1.

As our course is pay and play all of the above annoys me but I do try to educate, as nicely as possible, people on etiquette required.

Currently thinking about the £2 fine if you're found without a pitchmark repairer by the marshall (We sell them for 10p!) and funds go to the Captain's charity.

I am known for my fetish of raked bunkers though...!

CK

What's the likelihood of this £2 fine going through? I think it's a good idea. Is the marshall there still the old boy that drives around in the buggy? I used to love it when he would come up and take your bacon sandwich order and have it ready for the start of the back 9. Have never had that anywhere else.

Ha ha, yeah he'll be back very soon and the bacon rolls orders still happen! Does nothing for my waistline tho!

My one, from personal experience, is what Bacardi Batman said abou people always asking to watch their shot but not yours. We have a mate who is always telling you to watch his (which we all do as it's common courtesy) but when you want him to do it ... "sorry mate I wasn't looking" ... Annoys me no end as well as pitchmarks and slow play.

The player who inists on telling what he did wrong on each of his 97 bad shots, more particularly, the ones who tell you but get the swing fault "diagnosis" wrong each time.

Add to this the better player who, whenever he hits a bad shot, tells you what he was trying to do and why it all went so wrong!

I can hit all my own bl***y bad shots!

Chris

There is one act on my course that really gets me. There is a hole where you have to walk back down a hill to the next tee so what to people do, leave their bags beside the green where they can easily be hit and incur a penalty. Does not take much to move them away from the green.

you catch a group up and they start holding you up around the 6th or 7th hole, to the point where you are within speaking range of them, only for them to say "we would let you through but we're coming off after 9" - so its ok to hold us up for 3 holes still - wtf!

Pitchmarks, people who don't replace divots, litter...

But most of all, people who have a bad start to their round and then have a bad attitude for the rest of the round, dragging everyoine else in the group down, or walking in in a huff mid-competition ESPECIALLY when you are only a two ball in the first place.
