Hi All,

I am looking at re-gripping my clubs ready for when the time comes and we can actually play again!

I have P790's with standard Taylormade Golf Pride Tour Velvets and would like something a little thicker. I have ordered replacement tour velvet's 0.60 thickness but i am unsure of the thickness of the standard ones i think they could be 0.56 according to the website.

I am looking for something a little thicker in the hand without going overboard. I have ordered 100 double sided tape strips which are thicker than masking tape.

Question is if i were to put 1 extra layer of the double sided on would it make a difference? or is it best to go with 2 extra layers?

Thanks guys any recommendations appreciated.

Couple of extra layers of tape will be absolutely fine. It’s about 4 layers to reach midsize.

Just make sure you use lots of White spirit

I second what Clive has said, never seen that before but I've just went through and it seems decent.

I have 4 layers on, feels more comfortable to me.

I have 1 extra layer on mine - it's remarkable how different if feels without!

I was always told you could judge your grip width by gripping the club in the usual way and the fingers of your top hand should just touch you palm with a normal pressure of grip.

Really depends on the tape your using, if your using grip tape, all you will need is two layers. If you use masking tape as a layer under the grip tape, you will need two wraps of this to achieve a similar thickness to just putting two layers of grip tape on top of each other. The masking tape method is the way to go as you can build up each hand independently easier and also its considerably cheaper than grip tape

Check the butt thickness of your shafts, Google it. You need to order the correct size of grip to get 'standard' thickness then you can adjust with layers of tape from there.

.58 and .60 refere to the shaft diameter and to the internal bore of the grip....they have nothing to do with the thickness of the grip. Standard, midsized and oversized are terms that effectively reflect the wall diameter of the grip and the ultimate thickness of the installed grip.

A standard .58 grip on a .58 shaft will be exactly the same external diameter as a standard .60 grip on a .60 shaft.....in direct comparison the .60 grip will have a slightly thinner wall than the .58 grip....which is how the external size is maintained at a nominal "standard" which I believe is 0.9"

If you try to fit a .58 bore grip on a .60 diameter shaft then you will result in a grip that will be fractionally larger...something like 1/64th of an inch bigger.....but there is very little likelihood that you will notice this.

If you fit a.60 bore grip on a .58 shaft then the opposite is true....the grip will be narrower....but again its a miniscule difference and unless you are ultra sensitive to such differences, it is unlikely that you will notice. However...an extra layer of tape wont harm in this case if it makes you feel more comfortable.

Thank you for the detailed response. I have a .60 shaft with .58 grip but the grips I’m buying are .60

I’ll start with 2 layers of masking tape and 1 layer of grip tape see how it feels

Thanks again guys

The simple question comes why not buy thicker grips in the first place?

If you've already got 0.58 grips on a 0.60 shaft you're halfway to a midsize already. Why not just buy a 0.60 midsize & avoid all the faffing about with extra layers of tape?
