GPS watches

My father in law had been thinking about a GPS watch and, as he got vouchers for Christmas, we went shopping for one the other day.

I've not previously been a big fan as though wearing a watch to play in would be uncomfortable. But, having tried pretty much all of them on and having a play with features, I think I'm a convert. I was particularly impressed with the TomTom and the Bushnell for comfort.

Father in law ended up going for the Bushnell as it is very easy to use, has a large clear display and is very light and comfortable. Was also £65 cheaper than the Tom Tom. It does look like a really good bit of kit for the money.

Got the Shotsaver SG255x from Santa.. haven't had the chance to properly test it out as we were on winter greens yesterday, but impressed by the gadget from just having a little play.

a little review of the skycaddie then,

Firstly all registered and synced as your required to do, with no problems and no fee's. Given a full charge using its own little cable plugged into my lap top. So at the course watch put into golf mode and left to find my local muni 9 hole, took around 4 mins to find course. Instant readout of distance to front, middle and back of green and very clear display even in bright sunlight which i was worried about because i thought the display looked a little faint but was not an issue. Played a very frosty 9 holes and found the watch to be very easy to use, distances to greens update instantly as you select the next hole, there is an automatic setting for this and will try that next time out. Used the simple score counter, no issues there either. The screens default setting is distances but you can switch to your score then to time and round time but after a few seconds it will switch back to distance which i think is great. So i am a very happy man really, so simple to use, works well and gives you the info you need with no fuss.

I must admit that a GPS watch does intrigue me, I'm so new to the game though that I don't think it'll help much now.

I'm holding out for the Apple Watch in the hopes that Garmin or someone will write an App for it too.

Agree! Even though I do pay golf quite frequently I'd rather spend my money on clubs (one's bag can never be too updated). I'm not saying that golf watches aren't more practical when it comes to other devices, but then again taking a phone out of your pocket is not that disruptive if you don't go around checking other stuff.

I use Hole19 Golf GPS App on my iPhone. It's pretty neat and it's free (which means more money for my clubs!)!

And according to what they posted on Reddit some time ago, they are working on creating an app for Apple Watch. Awesome right?
