We are planning a trip to either Lancashire or Aberdeen (odd choices but friends are flying in from Norway) and are looking for some good value links golf. We'd love to play West Lancs, Hillside, Cruden Bay etc but the summer green fees are too expensive for us. Does anyone know of some decent value links course around Lancashire or Aberdeen? Looking at Max 75 green fee - ideally 35 ;-)

Not played it - but Leosowe looks like a great value links course. Pretty much next door to Royal Liverpool so you get the same views and save about £200 (y)

If it has to be links then Newburgh on Ythan is out of Aberdeen 20 mins north and is decent enough, has a great nine and an ordinary nine.
The links municipal courses in Aberdeen itself - Kings Links is a decent track and cheap. Balnagask on the south side of the harbour is in a roughish area but the layout is not bad, also cheap. They need some wind for defence, not in the same league as expensive Royal Aberdeen or Murcar.
Never played it but Fraserburgh an hour away north is meant to be ok.
An hour south also gives you Montrose.

Aberdeenshire, try Inverallochy, Fraserburgh & Peterhead, or slightly south you have Montrose. I don't think you'll be impressed at all by Newburgh so would give it a miss

Fraserbrough and Peterhead are supposed to be good, im not sure any of the others will be under £100. there is a Municiple links right in the town that looked ok.

Alas all the best places Royal Aberdeen, Trump< CB and Murcar will all be well over £100

I'm in Aberdeen area. Difficult to pick up cheap green fees now....even Newburgh standard green fee is £110, Fraserburgh £120, etc, albeit there are discounts for locals and Scottish/UK postcodes.

Peterhead and Fraserburgh are both excellent courses....classic links in the dunes (minus the opening holes at Peterhead) and both do 2-4-1 green fees via https://www.greenfree.co.uk/golf-courses-scotland.aspx

Play those, and throw in the 9 hole St Olaf at Cruden Bay which is a really good little course in the middle of the big one and is just £35 for 18 holes.

Inverallochy a good one also as mentioned by Banchory Buddha above.

Echo what others have said. Below are some options with approx prices for their best rates. If you use a County Card or play off peak, then you will get much better value.

LANCASHIRE
Leasowe £30pp
Ormskirk £50pp CC
Caldy £60 CC
Wallasey £120 CC/Twl
Formby Ladies £100 Day

ABERDEEN
Peterhead £30 UK Twl
Fraserburgh £50 Twl
Newburgh £65/40 UK/Twl
Inverallochy c£50/30 Rnd/Twl
Kings Links £31/16 Rnd/Twl
Balnagask £31/16 Rnd/Twl
Stonehaven £33 Twl

Some notes…

Ormskirk is an inland heath to woodland style course, but close to Southport. Formby Ladies is shorter than its big brother, but great fun, and you can usually have a whole day for the green fee, so much better value.

In the Aberdeen area, Fraserburgh and Peterhead are both pretty good and great value for twilight. They are somewhat further away, at 45-55 mins from Aberdeen. They would be my top choice, followed by Newburgh and then Inverallochy. Stonehaven slightly south is a clifftop course with great views. The munis of Kings Links and Balnagask offer very affordable golf with classic links holes and quirk/great views respectively.

Both these areas have some good to excellent inland courses too, which are usually much cheaper than the links. Just ask if you’d like more info.

My own club, Fleetwood, would fall in to the OP's original budget :p
Good choice if they're willing to consider around Blackpool. Also SAOL nearby County card rate is £65, so may be doable. There are also loads of good inland corses around Blackpool such as Preston, Lancaster, Pleasington and Clitheroe.

Don't really like Fleetwood. Very dour course and the ugliest clubhouse you will ever see.
In Lancashire at Anne's old links and fairhaven would be your best bet

As already mentioned here, Leasowe is a fun course. The first 5/6 holes are the most "linksy". Overall it's very good value for money — and the staff/membership are super friendly.
