• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

Golfs pecking order.

Shanker its the physicality of both hurling and foootball that makes the games what they are. The really mad men on a hurling field are the goalkeepers who stand in the way of a ball going at 100 mph.

regarding injuries hurling has the least serious injuries, hurlers accepted the odd broken finger, stitches in various cuts as the norm, stitches are out within a week and your playing again.
The more serious injuries,IMHO, are in rugby, then soccer then gaelic football and finally hurling.

Golf was my 1st love until I had my daughter, then time and finances stopped me playing for 12 years. The local bowls club was close by and joined up. Never a brilliant player but enjoyed it and when I finally decided to get back to golf, my putting was great.

Golf everytime! :)

Hi,
Played Gaelic soccer and Rugby gave up the gaelic at 26 after i had taken up rugby at 25 played until i was 33 and am a golf nut played all the above to a high standard and hope to get the handicap down to single figures just wish i had taken up golf at a younger age only play 3/4 times a year up until 30 or so. And Ireland for the grand slam at the weekend I still love watching rugby.

I played footie from a kid to 33 years of age when the knees went, got to play reserve league games up front for my beloved Cardiff City but never broke into the first team.

Now it's golf all the way although I do still get to Cardiff games when I can my shift work means it's not worth paying for a season ticket. I don't watch as much footie on the box as I used to but try to watch as much golf as HID will allow.

If I had to watch one sport only it would be CCFC but to play only one game it's golf all the way.

I have played county football and county rugby (not in the same season obviously) and am the only person I know to have done so! I have won regional badminton competitions and am reasonable at any sport I have tried to be honest. Golf was a different kettle of fish however as I was hopeless when I started which is what intrigued me as I was to stubborn to accept there was a sport I was bad at!

I have now been playing seriously for just over a year and absolutely love the game and can't get enough of trying to lower my score / better my ability. I am actually planning on having a break from football at the end of this season so I can devote more time to golf as I work one day of the weekend and play football the other leaving no time for golf. (I currently only play about once a week, and often I only play about 1 or 2 rounds a month and the rest is done on the practice ground). I really am obsessed with this game and at the end of the football season it will be undisputedly my number 1 sport.

eaglehunter...

I see what your saying about golf being more of a challange to get better at.

There have been some good replies on this thread. One thing that stands out ..... everybody loves golf!

Already looking forward to cleaning my clubs tonight when my son is in bed in preparation for tomorrows round. After the golf tomorrow its off to the pub to hopefully watch Ireland win their first Grand Slam since 1949!!

Somethings it fun to watch other sports!

Played most sports to a reasonable level.
Football was always my No1, Rugby (union), boxing, tennis, squash, distance running, cricket, cycling, pool, . Sport came naturally to me and I used to play to single figures at golf before beer, women & family got in the way, in that order.
I haven't got the athleticism that I used to have but i am determined to get as good as i can at golf and put the hours in on the practice ground. Two years back into this wonderful game and things are progressing well but are sometimes so bloody frustrating :D

Ive gone from sport to sport though I did play football till I was about 46 but it was never the passion game that others were to me. Squash was something I was very good at in my day and I got quite good at snooker though not quite in the upper echelons, Badminton for a while I enjoyed too, Clay shooting for a time, 10 pin Bowling too, even got up to a bit of Ralleying at one time, but Darts and Golf have always been with me since I was a 19yr old, My biggest passion has always been Bikes and until recently you would always find me on road bikes, teaching or just riding, race bikes, various off road bikes, track days galore, stunting etc but my condition and circumstances have curtailed all that, as with everything so Golf has now become my No 1 these days. ;)

I used to be a hard core angler, I even used to do some inshore charter skippering. Within a couple of years of taking up golf I jacked that completely. have recently started a bit of fishing again but given the choice of fishing or golf, golf would always win!

Played golf since I was about 13 till about 2005 when I got into motrobikes and bike racing. Bought a bike and tended to drift away from golf and more to going out on the bike. Adrenalin buzz is something else.

Carried on riding and gave up my golf membership. Went riding with my best m8 in 2005 and unfortunately he died in an accident, so my riding career came to a stop. Rejoined my club later that year and have the bug back.

Cant wait for the season to begin, but also miss riding a lot. Would jump back on a bike tomorrow if my g/f and parents wouldn't worry so much.

Anyway, here's to getting cut to 6 this year.
