After sitting in the house last Sunday when the CIS Cup final was on I found myself not bothering much with the football instead I was watching online coverage of the golf!

Now a couple of years ago I would have been at the pub for the match but now I prefered to watch golf on a laptop over a game of footie on a 46" TV

I am (was) :D football daft but if I was given a choice of only ever watching 1 sport again either live or on TV then it would be golf.

Its funny how this wonderful game has caught me out. I have played international schoolboy soccer and represented my county in Gaelic football so I was fairly handy with the big ball. Shame I cant say the same about golf. Its the only sport I have taken up that I cant and never will get as good at as I could at other sports. What I mean is anyother sports I played eg squash, badminton, basketball I got the hang of quickly....golf ....OH NO

Thats what makes it great I will never get bored as Im a ultra competitive person and golf is such a great game.

I suppose the purpose of this post is....have you moved away from other sports since you started playing golf and if you could only watch 1 sport what would it be?

I did a lot of fishing, mainly fly fishing and some Piking before I took up Golf. I thought there was noting better than time along the bank trying to outwit a fish :)

There is now an awful lot of unused tackle in my garage, that my Mrs keeps telling me to put on ebay. I cant and will never do it. I just know I will pick it up again at some point, but for the moment Golf dominates all activity time !!

On the one sport question.....it would have to be football. Being a Season Ticket holder at The Lane, is another great indulgence.

Farney, I have followed a similar path (normal football), YTS deal at a pro club, drift off to semi pro football. 22 years of travelling up & down the country playing at grounds from Gateshead to Dover to Penzance and Aber-bloody-rystwyth!

Packed the football in a couple of years ago and concentrated on my golf. I book days off work to sit and watch the Ryder Cup & The Open now, but if Man Utd and Liverpool were playing in my back garden I would shut the curtains.

That endless struggle to perfect hitting a ball of elastic bands into a hole in the ground is all consuming :)

I was pretty handy at golf as a youngster and so for me the battle is with my head still thinking I'm an assitant pro and my swing and my 40 something body thinking something else. Its trying to find a level that I'm happy at. I want to get back down to single figures but I want to have fun with my golf too.

I played non league football (Ryman Dvision 2 south) for a game before suffering a career ending injury in an FA cup qualifier on debut. I was a handy wicketkeepr at lower level club cricket and did some long distance running as a kid (to no great level). It was golf that I had an affinity to. I wouldn't have missed playing sunday morning footie with my mates and all the laughs we had along the way for anything but it is golf that kept calling me back.

Those in the know are aware of the fact that I signed non-league terms as a 'keeper before having my left knee very badly injured by an oncoming striker who stamped on my knee, forcing the knee joint to flex backwards and do some nasty damage.

Also boxed at ceasars in streatham a few times.

Played pool for decent money.

Did a bit of sea match fishing and tournament casting.

Now I just concentrate on 5-a-side and light sparring.

Do fish still.

Golf is number 1 by far though.

I played rugby for most of my life and golf came into play when I stopped playing rugby through injury.

Rugby will remain my favorite game to watch but I am enjoying my time on the golf course far more than probably the last 10 years playing rugby.

Exactly the same as me. Playing in goal, one on one and came out of the area and got to the ball which I sent over the stand and the guy came in studs up a couple of days after the ball had gone. Smashed to knee to pieces and still get problems with it.

Funny that I was a keeper too. Was signed for a League of Ireland club but didnt play any first team games. My first love at that stsge was Gaelic so I was never going to miss a Gaelic match over a soccer. I look back and think what if my folks had an interest in soccer would I have been pushed a bit harder.....who knows Im happy now.

But its golf all the way

Played both hurling and gaelic until i was 32, broke collar bone and arm within six months, arm require surgery and
a three day stay in hospital--so ended my hurling/football career. Amazingly, even though i love my golf i still miss playing my one true love Hurling--the greatest game to play.

Like Farneyman i was luck enough to play for the county at U/16, minor, U/21 and junior level.

Yes, Farneyman.
One of the most interesting posts on this board for a long time. I've met a few people who have played other sports at a high level and have got the golf bug.
I would disagree, however, about golf on the telly. Tennis and snooker were made for the screen. Golf wasn't.
Regards
Shanker.

I was lucky with injuries....I only broke my jaw, dislocated shoulder 3 times, ligaments in both ankles(not at once) chiped bone on my kneecap, dislocated 7 fingers at diferent times, knocked out twice, stiches in my chin, not to mention the sore knees.I could go on.... My last injury was a mallet finger where I had to keep it in plastic split for 8 weeks. Cut the finger of a golf glove and was still able to play.

Cricket was my game before Golf. I was a very handy medium-pace swing/seam bowler - best figures 10 overs, 2 maidens 10 wickets for 23 runs. Bit of a middle order basher too. Best scores 88 out or 83 not out.

Fancied myself as a bit of an Ian Botham - still my hero!
But the knees got knackered and I couldn't play to the same standard and didn't want to continue in lower games so I packed it in. Said to HID that I had to play something seriously and golf seemed the next best thing. Boy, do I wish I'd started playing at 3 instead of 30!!
Now I can't watch cricket on the box, football in general is dull and full of posers, rugby is just a kickabout so its Golf all the way.

Golf all the way for me but playing not watching - the only golf I watch on the box is The Masters, The Open and the Ryder Cup...I've got Sky but just find it dull if I watch it for more than 5 minutes....I like watching the Pros hit it on the range but anything past the hospitality is not really my thing....

(cant figur out quote)

I know what you mean. I grew up less than 3 miles from a course and never played it until 3 years ago. Oh the mispent time I had as a youth!!!!! Some of it was better than golf ;)

Epee fencing was my game, til I got married. Knees are shot, and back and neck problems too, so not the best thing health wise, but the competition was awesome. Adrenalin, skill, tactics, all in a 3 minute fight. Blommin tiring too. Never done anything like it iin terms of physical hard work. One thing though, I was good at it. Unlike golf. A bit on the expensive side though. Makes golf look cheap.
