Golfing Bravado

All of those are incredibly sexy, however, those black Adams irons are beauuutiful.

Re: Garush's point about not judging people for using 'lesser' equipment. My original post was that it seemed odd that people would use gear designed for a different type of player to them, when other less expensive stuff may actually be the answer.

I am a big believer in playing what's right for you, rather than what gives you the biggest bragging right. In fact, I was saying this just yesterday when I was putting the headcover back on my R1 driver which has a tour 65g RIP Phenom x-stiff shaft ...

You're absolutely correct we've all seen high handicappers hacking Pro-vs round with butterknife blades and known they've got the wrong kit!

My point was the 3 companies that were ousted (Wilson Staff, Adams and John Letters) to me at least deserve a look!

mmmmmmmm,I see what you mean.
Saw the equipment and then the handicap!!
Some how they do not match up.
My playing partner has all the latest Nike gear, top clubs ,clothing and balls.
See him on the first tee and you think, he must be low.
Can he break 100.
Sometimes.

Which is cool if it's they're maybe the covert irons / driver with shafts etc suited ... but if they're the butter knife blades with PX 7.0's in them, maybe not the correct call :)

Incidentally, some of the more expensive clubs can be those aimed at game improvement. As much as I love Ping's, their irons are always at the top end of the market price-wise, including their 'G' range which is generally aimed at game improvers. I would never say "don't spend money on golf gear" just make sure if you're gonna spend, you're spending wisely!

So you wouldn't use, Adams, Wilson or John Letters, but you would use Bay Hill :);)

This is because the bay hill clubs i have are from a starter set, from when i first started playing golf when i was around 13/14 bought for me by my parents so had no choice in the matter. I am slowly upgrading my bag club by club. AS i said in my post some people are on budgets and i havent had the money to upgrade my last couple of clubs. Hopefully get them upgraded soon but sometimes other things are more important.

And i didnt say i would use them i just stated that they would initially appeal to me, but if i did try them and they were the best results then i would go for them. Its like people and nike some people dont like nike clubs where as i do and i think they make nice clubs.

In the summer, I play games with a mate who has a + handicap. Beautiful player. We tend to add a fun element and often pick the ball that each other has to use. I recall one such match when I gave him an orange Molitor to play with, a ball so hard that it can only be cut with another Molitor! :)

He shot 4 under with it.

We do the same thing and bring a Persimmon driver for each other to use sometimes. My old wooden Mizuno tour driver is still as good as it ever was and when hit well, is just as long as it's modern equivalent. I concede though that it is trickier to hit well and often. That said, we both play to our handicaps with them.

Say what you like about equipment, from tees to drivers to shoes. They do not make up for any golfer's deficiencies. Good players shoot good scores. Good equipment does not - they are just tools.

"New shineys" to coin that awful forum phrase, make little or no difference to anything except ego, happiness and bank balance.

Not sure that this equate to bravado, more about self satisfaction, image and desperation to succeed in my view.

They are just clubs and balls to me.
His clothes look smart though.

If you want to play with premium balls, clubs gear and can afford it, go for it. AS to the matter are they suited to your game , again not fussed, so long as your happy and i'm guessing you are as you've bought them , again go for it and enjoy.

I am a 22 handicap gaming a £350 driver, I am using Pro V1 and I have to say they both perform excellently. I lost my last lethal at the weekend on the 1st and forgot to put my balls from the carry bag in my cart bag so only had 3 or 4 pro v1's. I never lost another ball although I putted rubbish as wasnt used to the softer ball and the crap greens. The R1 is more forgiving than any driver I have had thus far and I have had a few. I can tell when its off the toe/heel/bottom/top of the face yet it still goes a blody good distance. Ok I got the club via GM but I would happily pay for one now, I wouldnt have before mind you but then I didnt think it worth it.

One shot I played with the pro v1 was a 70 yd chip and nailed a lw to 2 ft and it stopped dead... that will do for me so just ordered some more!

Those that can will and those that can't wish they could!

This thread seems to be wandering about a bit...

Roughly on the o/p's theme, what I see most is people playing stiff shafts as if it was a measure of their manhood, when it seems to my untutored eye that a nice regular with a bit of release in it would be just the thing to get their ball flying nicely. Irons and drivers, applies to both.

Is it bravado, mis-understanding about the product, or .....

.....associated with image issues...

btw I know a lot of people who put their name on pick=ups ie your lady may not have paid for that ball (but tend to agree with your conclusion!)

anyhow, we can play the 'my shafts are stiffer than yours' game on Friday :)

I am stiff in woods but reg in irons, my previous irons were stiff as I though I was quicker and losing distance so I guess JB's opening post is right :p

22 handicap, just less than an average score of 100 shots a round or 6 shots per hole.
Does your game really merit a £350 driver or £5 golf ball.

Fair enough if you can afford it and don't care less.
Otherwise be careful you are not falling into the 'kings new clothes/keeping up with the Jones's trap.
