Golf Things That Gladden The Heart

I have played at 103 distinct golf clubs (more courses than that as some clubs have more than one course). Four of them have 'south' in the name, but only one 'north'. one 'west' and zero 'east'. There is no point to this post. You're welcome. 😗
Quite an interesting one never thought about points of the compass but I’ve actually completed the Compass point names of golf clubs I’ve played at !

North Wales
West Malling
East Sussex National
Southern Valley (No longer exists) & South Staffs

This has been messing with my head all day 😵‍💫. I'm racking my brains to think of my equivalent. I've definitely done North and West, probably have not done East, I must have done South, but can not think of one. Good teaser.

Scarborough South Cliff? Worth a visit if you haven’t already played there.

I’ve got West Lancs & Scarborough North Cliff but I can’t think of an east…

South Moor is even closer, Co. Durham. No idea what it's like. East seems to be the bigger challenge.

I’d forgotten about South Moor. I played there back in the late 80’s. The first is a par 3. The flag was in a slight depression and my ball disappeared bang on line with the hole. The track in the dew went to the hole, lipped out and finished a couple of inches behind the hole. Walking up I thought I’d got my first hole-in-one.

Going off at a tangent, is Washington GC still in existence? Think I played there every week for a couple of years from around 89-90 as part of a golf society. My society h’cap got to +1, club h’cap at South Shields, how did I forget South Shields, was 5.

Doh, I've played South Shields multiple times, I'm even arranging lifts this morning to play there in 10 days time 🤦‍♂️. Never registered, it was hiding in plain sight :ROFLMAO:.

Yes, it is still there. I've never played it. Don't know why, it just hasn't come up on my radar.

I had come to the conclusion that there was no course in Leicestershire with a compass point in it's name.

Then it occurred to me this morning that the nearest course to where I live is/was Western Park Muni. But it closed some years ago. Played it several times though.

I've also got Southern Valley and Southbroom (SA).
East Brighton and East Sussex.
Lots of West - West Chiltington (now closed), West Hill, West Kent, West Malling etc
North Forland, North Downs.

Compass points work in Hertfordshire, I've played East Herts, South Herts, West Herts. There's Mid Herts too, but no North Herts. I've played North Middlesex though, which is very close to South Herts. The founders of these clubs weren't very creative when it came to naming their club.

Love the post about playing the West Links at North Berwick in East Lothian.

…in East Lothian, which is in the South of Scotland…(perhaps stretching things only a little)

Five of my last six rounds being in my eight.

Plus I have two 7.1s in my 8…one of which was second last of my 20. But yesterday I stuck in a 7.1 that replaces that bottom one. I now have three rounds to get something in not too far from a 6.2 that’s in my 8 and that’s currently 4th bottom of my 20 to keep my HI round about where it currently is. And I can do that.

So for the time being I can just forget about my differentials and HI and just play golf…with (hopefully) two rounds of Club Championship golf coming up this weekend.

I will be having an interesting one on Saturday and it will be like the "old days".
I have a 3.6 dropping off. Matching it requires me to score 36 points in the comp.

37 and I come down 0.1
38 and I come down 0.2 etc

Trouble is - no buffer zone.
35 and I go up 0.1
34 and I go up 0.2
Maximum I can go up is 0.3 no matter how badly I score.

I could choose to go back to what I call "stableford thinking" as I play round, with level 2s as my target.

My old man has been playing golf for years.
He has never been much good but always enjoys being out with a smile on his face and he may not be a good golfer but he is a great golfing partner.
He played in his golf society yesterday and only went and won, they have been playing about 10 times a year for 35 years and it’s the only time he has won.
He has just phoned me and given me a run down of every shot, it sounds like the hard ground helped as not sure one shot actually got airborne 😂.
45 points he finished with (bandit).
The lads all gave him a standing ovation when he went to collect the prize for winning which was great of them.
He is now convinced he is the new Tiger Woods and Luke will be on the phone any minute 😂.

It really is a game that can be inclusive for all.

My dad had some golf clubs - mixed half set of hickory and brown painted shafts - probably got them in the early-mid 50s. Though I'm not sure that he ever really played much at all back then.

But when me and my brother started playing in our early teens he took up the game - a bit - mostly just to keep us company on the course but he did enjoy it - never had a handicap but was a 'holiday' member of Dunkeld and Birnam (as all three of us were).

If ever asked he'd say that he 'played at' golf. And on the few occasions he found himself playing with someone who could play the game, if they started to moan or comment on how poor or slow he was - he'd just tell them to go on their way by themselves. :ROFLMAO:

I’m guessing it’s rare for one club to have two quite different names with both names having a different compass point in them…I give you Royal North Devon aka Westward Ho! 👍

And I believe that there are embryonic plans to reopen Eastwood GC, closed but just a hop skip and a jump south of East Ren.
Eastwood Twelve
Already opened
