Golf Things That Gladden The Heart

Watched the Ladies open coverage yesterday and youngest Miss Morningstar (she’s 11) watched with me.

Today she asked can we go play golf 😱. So dropped the older two urchins to cinema and took the little lady to Basingstoke Golf centre to bash a few balls. She was terrible , but she absolutely loved it especially when she hit some good ones and her smile was worth it all. Didn’t offer her any technical advice other than how to baseball grip it as she has little hands and just gave the advice my dad gave me! Hit it as hard as you can!

She enjoyed it so much she ask to go again . So next time we’ll bash some more balls and have a go on the pitch and putt there.

Feeling very proud of her and perhaps a slight feeling of how my dad felt when we started as kids. I swear I got some sand in my eye though!!!

Similar to you, with golf I utterly love that me and the youngest Miss Squirrel (fairly similar age) have something in common we can do together - as long as that continues, she will naturally improve and I will try and improve but ultimately it’s immaterial if either of us go round in 59 or 200 😊.

Exactly this, I gave up playing 5 years ago as I fell out of love with how competitive I got and the work it was taking to maintain a low H/cap. Started again couple months ago and just now play for the enjoyment so now that hopefully she has the bug, it’s something I can share with her for a long time to come regardless of the scores, just to have some us time doing something we can share and enjoy will be very worth it.

I've been cut to my lowest ever index of 13.2. After last year was such a struggle, it's a great feeling to finally see all the hours at the driving range pay off. I don't even regret that ill-fated lesson I had 18 months ago, it just took a long, long time for me to truly grasp it and see the benefits of it. My goal for this year was to get back in the 13s, but if I can keep putting in rounds like I have these past couple of months, I could potentially get around 12 which would be incredible.

I just really need to find some way of practising my chipping more regularly - or at all - as I think that's now the main thing missing from my game.
