Really enjoyable day yesterday at Hankley Common (which is in magnificent condition btw) watching the Ladies British Open final qualifier. Walked with the group that had my club member Lottie Woad playing. Great golf and so good to be able to be ‘up close‘ watching. Lottie just failed to grab a qualifying spot, but got 3rd reserve ahead of many pros. Good stuff.

But such small margins in success/failure at top level pro and even am golf. Lottie three-putted 16th with a hard lip-out and that was the difference between a -3 and the -2 she finished on. -3 got a spot, 13 players on -2 battled sudden-death for 5 spots and 4 reserve places. And that was a great watch, and actually very exciting stuff for the spectators, but must have been very stressful for the 13.

Fingers crossed for three drop-outs (though unlikely). And meanwhile today no rest for Lottie as she’s off to Machynys in Wales for the Home Internationals that start tomorrow (from which she’ll withdraw if she gets an Open place). Great experience for the lass but the travel, never mind all the golf, must become a bit exhausting.

Which course did you prefer, West or East?

Tough choice tbh. I think east, not that I didn't enjoy the west I just really liked the east as it seemed to be more plotting the way round with the water rather than the west If I couldnt make a green in reg most of time I could hit as far as possible to lay up and just have 30-40 yards left where as on the east that could be in water

I actually misspoke it was £225 so even better but loved it

Some stunning holes
Was there for 4 days last month, courses were in fabulous condition, The West has become one of my all-time favourites to play. The East has the history, hosting a few Tour events back in the day, but it's a bit more tricky. My personal highlight was holing my pitch over the stream on the first on the East for an eagle two

Wow that's some eagle!

I've played both courses twice and best I've had is a hole out birdie from 100 yards on 1 (west )because I duffed my second shot lol 🤣

Not sure where to put this but it did make me smile.

Smashed a ball in to the deep grass on Saturday had a quick look but went to the provisional.

Played on Monday, time for a another search and walked straight to it, realised we were looking in the wrong place.

On Saturday I was first to tee off and had forgotten the line by the time the others teed off.

Just found out that the divisions split on Saturday was moved by a stroke. The guy who beat me by 2 shots was moved to Div 3.

First win in Div this year.

Most of my last half doz have been 5-8 over gross, with the last two being 5 over. I am pretty certain that I’ve never done that before, even when my handicap was for a short while 6 - and that would have been in the very early 90s. Retirement golf eh…👍😍

One of the club’s stalwarts and long term member of various committees did something splendid yesterday. In a year of qualifying scores in which his best was a gross 81, yesterday he did a gross 72 (level par) - and into the bargain the conditions were such that a -1 adjustment was applied across the board (I don’t actually know why the adjustment and not a PCC…anyway…).

And a HI cut from 9.9 to 7.6…how good was that 👍

I'm 'forcing' myself to go the the club 3-4 mornings a week to hit a bucket &/or practice short game before heading to the office

This morning was just with a wedge and spent 80 minutes all alone in the low sunshine at the short game area playing about 150 shots tweaking swing technique. Really great way to start the day (y)

A very golfaholic weekend. Saturday I practiced for 5 hours at range, short game and putting and Sunday my planned 18 holes of on-course practice turned into an impromptu 36 holes

Could do with a few more weekends like that

And scored a massive 96 + 115 on each round no doubt after all that practice. Lol. 😁

Unusual for me but didn't reach for the scorecard at all or even consider adding it up in my head so it could've been :LOL:

I know they weren't PB rounds that's for sure, but valuable in showing which clubs or shots were causing the doubles etc (even threw in a 9 !)
