Golf rules we let people break - what is one you know of?

There is no MLR that allows this. It should either be lift clean and replace (MLR E2) or lift clean and place (MLR E3), niethewr allow for dropping.
Does it ultimately matter if everyone is playing to the same rules? The comps are not qualifiers, there is no impact to this to anyone outside of the club.

Is that walking or buggies.
I’m a bit suspect of stuff from the US .
As far as I know, it's walking. The data demonstrates that the gaps between tee times do impact the length of round - shorter gaps mean longer rounds.
Not sure why you'd be suspect of the conclusions just because the report was from another country - the Golf Course Owners Association is a reputable group and obviously involved with the game.

No it’s almost everywhere I’ve played in the USA it’s mandatory buggies.

Not really, but I do wonder whether having all these different unauthorised local rules contributes to the general confusion around the rules.
I get your point but to be fair the club were very clear. In normal, winter conditions, lift and clean on the fairway only. When the weather became worse, next email, lift and clean on the fairway, lift, clean and drop off the fairway. (I have not gone back and used used their wording so if anything is not entirely correct that is my doing). Once this period is over they will send another email advising this.

They keep it simple and clear so no one in the club should be unaware of what is required. They don't complicate the instructions. If I went to another club to play a winter open I would make sure I knew what their requirements were and if I got them wrong on the day, that's on me.

We have gone one step further when our course is NQ and they state rake and replace in bunkers.

Stands by for incoming...................................

When bunkers are compacted that makes perfect sense to me.
It’s a game of golf in winter .a nice stroll with friends and a drink later.
Why make it harder.

The only problem with this is that if you want to hide something put it in an email to golf club members........ ;)

I hoped you have got the wording wrong there and if they made it simple and clear as you say I would have thought that you would remember. I would not be at all surprised if you haven't having seen a number of local rules that make a similar mistake.

Rules I think some / many golfers are more likely to ignore (most probably already mentioned)

  • Search time
  • Giving the wrong score to the marker (i.e. some people literally just write down what they are told, rather than having counted up the shots of the person themselves to clarify)
  • Drop position (I've seen golfers just drop in a position that gives them a shot, even if it is outside the area they are allowed to drop, and many golfers will just let them)
  • Giving advice
  • Allowing a golfer to take a drop when there is a good chance the ball could be lost outside a penalty area
Actually, as I was thinking of the list, I realised there are probably quite a few golfers who will never ever question any rule infringement, either because they are not confident of the actual rule or because they want an easy life and probably think they will be creating an unnecessarily awkward situation.

I played with a chap at the weekend, who twice gave me a lower score than he actually scored in the space of 3 holes (6th and 8th). I questioned this, and had to go through each shot with him before he realised he gave me the wrong score (I'm sure he knew, as he sounded a bit sheepish when he gave me the score and he clearly his a couple of diabolical shots on each hole he maybe thought I didn't see). However, I would not be surprised if a good number of golfers would just write down what he said and move on.

I went back through my emails, see below:

Fairways - mark, pick up, clean and place inside of 6” no nearer the hole

Any other part of the course- mark, pick up, clean and drop inside of 1 club length no nearer the hole

In my head, that's what I meant 😄

I assumed this was the practice every golf club takes during the winter months.

Very confusing if other clubs / members are using different local rules.

Honestly thought it was one rule for everyone 🤣
