Golf Random Irritations

I know of a fairly prestigious course who have preferred lies all year round.
Whether it is allowed I severely doubt but it’s what they do.
Also have a club rule that anyone over 65 can play off any tee they wish even in comps that state white tees.

I was very confused when playing them in a match and three of us teed off the whites and then the other member of the group wanders off and tees it up on the yellows.
I did think he was trying it on but he showed me the rule on the noticeboard.

Hmmm and you accept that first sentence like it’s written on stone.
Why does it have to be like that. I have never accepted that golf should be a game of chance. It is ,and should be the aim, a game of skill. A good drive down the middle of the fairway finishes in a divot hole.
To be accepted? Not reducing the sport to a game of chance?
Sure, if the ball finishes near a bush etc , then play as it lies, but why is the game less skilful if a good shot is punished. If all can place outside a divot hole then who is disadvantaged? And who is unfairly advantaged?
That next shot off the reasonable fairway by ten different people will reflect ten different skill levels , with appropriate results. So, why mess people around making them subject to bad luck outcomes?

Time to rethink exactly what “ as it lies “ should mean.
Part of the skill of golf is learning how to play with bad lies and having the mental fortitude to overcome them.

My best and longest drive yesterday finished on a horrible bare lie in the fairway with a slight rut where it had been muddy I scaffed a poor shot forward into a patch of heather on the fairway and finished with a seven. Bad luck, slightly but mainly bad golf a better player would have had the technique to overcome it. That's the game. You have variable lies differing winds etc. If you want to reduce it to shots on a perfect lie go play on a simulator. Its a poor imitation of what golf is about.

It's a fundamental part of golf, goes with the game. If you want that changing, I can't see it happening 🤷.

Every so often the whole divot debate comes up, ironically I got a stinker of one yesterday, but I don't see any appetite for that to change. Until it does............

Winter rules on my Hertfordshire course until 18 May. Fairways are 99% beautiful green carpets, but there are a few bare patches where the ground hasn’t recovered from winter work. No rain plus cold nights.
It would be more appropriate to identify those "winter work" areas as ground under repair instead of using the LCP Local Rule for the entire closely-mown area.

That is a valid debate and I am sure it is one that will continue for years.
However I don't believe that it should be up to a club committee, who happen to endorse that point of view, to be able to accept scores for handicapping with their members moving balls out of divots on otherwise fine playing conditions, just because they think the current rules of golf are unfair.
Further, in the Official Guide to the Rules of Golf, under the Model Local Rules, it says, "A Committee must not use a Local Rule to waive a penalty or modify a Rule of Golf simply because it might prefer a Rule to be different."

It's May, we've had great weather for a month now, and some courses still don't bother cutting their fairways properly or give them any definition. Definition requires next to no cutting, it's not hard!

So when I won the Stromberg comp. They sent me through some gear. 3 x polos, a lovely mid layer and some
More shoes.
Ave ended up giving the 3 x polos to a PP as they were XL and I am A Large. I looked like Harry Hill In them. ☹️
He is over the moon so I should post in the gladden the hearts thread. But me am gutted coz they were gorgeous.
It must have been because of the chuck up you gave the shoes. I saw it on Facebook a week or so ago. 👍
