Golf Random Irritations

Again, I can see why GK are pushing to lay turf as it gets the job done quick, but you don't need to do this. Turn the area over with a "Mantis", level it, chuck grass seed down in march. Three / four weeks later. Job done. Just have a temp tee until things are ready.
What if the weather is crap in March and good in Nov/Dec/Jan etc when the work could of been done.

I've offered. I won't sit back and just mouth off, I'll put myself forward. This doesn't work at my place. They don't want someone with ideas. I don't have the expertise, far from it, but I'd certainly stir things up with the GK and would look forward to them explining to me why they couldn't do anything suggested, as, form what I hear, all they come back with is cost cost cost. The biggest cost is the manual labour! How much our head GK is on for mowing grass is outragous.
I got a deal for you.
How about you come round and do my garden and when your tooth hurts I’ll fix it for you?
I’m not a dentist but I have used a drill before so that should be fine shouldn’t it?

We’ve in the last two weeks felled two mature conifers…they stood very close together by themselves with no other conifers insight, on an otherwise open slope way short and very wide of our par 3 3rd’s green. Oh the sound and fury coming from some. How could they; what vandalism; horrendous; where was that in the winter work plan or the plan for the new 2nd hole; disgraceful…

No…I’m not irritated by the removal of two out of place and pointless (from a golfing perspective) trees…it’s the whining and moaning…the confected outrage that irritates me. But as it comes from the usual suspects I can hear it - get irritated, then cast their whinging aside.

I accompanied our Manager to GMCA meeting a few months ago. One of the speakers gave a presentation on tree and woodland management. He did state that the biggest problem faced by green keepers when proactively managing trees on the course, was from ill informed members that couldn’t understand the need to cut down living trees for the benefit of the wooded areas.

Our ‘arboreal’ consultant advised us a good few years ago that we had many beautiful specimen trees that were being blocked and crowded out by ‘rubbish’. Various course architects have also identified trees that were out of place in the context of the design of holes, or that added nothing to the golfing challenge…indeed trees often reduce challenge by eliminating options. We’ve gone through a gradual removal of such ‘rubbish’ and inappropriately positioned trees, but the moaning… Of course the fact that the course has been very wet this last couple of months is, according to the moaners, down to tree removal…and nothing to do with 300mm of rain on the course in the last 5 weeks.

On the trees just removed…and that according to the moaners are acts of vandalism that make the hole ‘unrecognisable’…they seem to forget that they weren’t there 40yrs ago - the hole was.

Honestly.

Down the years we've taken loads of trees and bushes out....
There's a warning bell on the 3rd hole...apparently it used to be in the middle of a huge bush...now there's nothing within 50 yards of it.
The Par 3 16th is played over a pit, for want of a better word.
It used to filled with bushes and trees and if you topped it off the tee you didn't bother looking for it..now there's the odd mature tree at the edge
The course was changing from a Chalk Downland course, almost Linksy in style, to a pure tree-lined Parkland..
It's working it's way back to it's roots with every passing year...

There will always be a minority who will moan when something is down to the course

Not worth worrying about them

I see what you did there!!

Why don't you carrry out an experiment to prove your point? Dig up your garden this weekend and chuck grass seed down on Sunday (1st March). Then let's see if it's ready to be used as a tee box in 3 or 4 weeks. You can post a photo update on here every week, I'm sure it will be popular. You could even start your own youtube channel to document the progress.

Hankley removed lots of trees.... hasn't done any damage. Saunton was asked (told?) by Natural England, to remove all non native bushes, trees and scrub. Has done so.

Neither course is worse for the exercise 🙃

We have done this at our course over the last couple of years culminating in the planting of 250 saplings over the last couple of weeks. I have been led to believe that this, (removing non native trees) is a directive from England Golf.

I reckon he should start his own groundwork’s firm. With those guaranteed simple turnaround times he’ll be a millionaire in no time.

My spelling and grammar checker that I thought was a freebee turns out to be a free trial which has ended. All of my previous, perfect posts were produce with barely a thought in my head.

Now? I'm going to have to concentrate and check everything twice, and still fail miserably.

Heaven knows how many mistakes are in this one.

I draft most of my posts in my email app, it has built in spell/grammar check etc and then I copy/paste it into the forum and delete the draft email
