Golf Random Irritations

Grass bunkers are very good

Berkhampstead has only grass bunkers and they are still a hazard
I wouldn't call them grass bunkers; they are more sort of grassy knolls, with tangly grass that make very effective hazards. And they require much less maintenance than bunkers, of course.

(PS. FYI it's Berkhamsted, not Berkhampstead)

Let's hope there's no snipers hiding..... 😋

Hitting the par 3 green on my practice round early this evening and spying at least six or seven pitch marks to repair. All down the front of the green and perfectly visible.
I thought you were living in a desert down south? I haven't had to use a pitch repairer for about 3 weeks. We have had some rain up here, not much, but the greens are all like concrete still. No chance of making an indent.

The greens are maybe not being watered enough at your place?
Not just my place, I've played a few Opens recently and they are all the same. We were at The Roxburghe on Monday, course was immaculate, they must have an army of green keepers. Not a mark on any of the vast greens and we were out in the afternoon.

I think the heat is so warm it's just sucking out the moisture. Any overnight watering is soon taken off the surface.

Played the Roxburghe last year, we have a reciprocal deal there.
A very nice and challenging course.

It's a fabulous place. You know it by the end of the round, it's a long walk, but challenge is a very apt description 😄. I couldn't be a member there, too tough, but to visit and play it 😍.

I haven't played it for a couple of years, couldn't get over the number of cottages built along the 1st and 2nd. Heck of an expansion and set up, but done well. Shame about the cost of renting them though.

Maybe they watered this green, I don't know. As said above it's a short one so most people hitting wedge with a bit of height. Maybe you've explained why nobody thought to carry a repairer with them!

It absolutely chucked it down here on Monday night. so heavy there were massive puddles everywhere and the drains were overflowing.

Played Tuesday morning, you would never know there had been any rain, greens still like concrete.

I'm the same LT in finding by the time I've climbed the hill at the Par3 15th, then the walk from the green up to the 16th tee (can't play off the black tee there, can't reach the fairway from there if it's into the wind) then the climbs on the 17th & 18th and I'm usually knackered.
As Ken says love going to play there under our reciprocal but just couldn't be a member, getting way too tough physically for me now

It's the absolute opposite of last year when you could have a few dry days but the slightest hint of rain and you were squelching again.

I found this comment unusual. At most courses I know, the greens are the same in summer regardless of the weather.
