Golf - Olympics - Who Wins?

Suddenly developed quite an interest in this - and i didn't think I would. Who'd have known? Course looks good and the players couldn't look more proud. Roll on the next few days, this could hopefully be good battle and advert for the sport...

As above

Now it is on the box it is good to watch, a bit surreal seeing Olympic golf and would think as a player i WOULD want to be part of the experience.

Still think it should be a mixed team event but that is another thread

I have to say though, there is no way it will attract more fans

I watched FENCING, OMG they have a sit down then ANOTHER 3 MINUTES

Imagine non golfers watching golf, they watch 20mins and then ask WHO WON?

NO NO NO, it they have to do that 71 more times over the next 4 days!

For cricket to get into the olympics it would need a special format, even it's shorter form has been deemed too long.

So how on earth did 72 hole stroke play get used? Really needed some innovation here. Bring that on for Tokyo please!

To be a little fair to Rory, Johnson, Day, Scott and Speith re Zika, when they gave the blimp or aerial view it really looks like a swampy mosquito haven!

Glad to see those 5 haven't rocked up at the John Deere Classic to play and are keeping their 'shamed' heads down!

Went with F Aguilar to win the gold medal, great looking course that looks like its going to be a birdie fest, nice for the lesser players to be able to tee it up with the worlds best golfers,

Delaet and pieters started well

In reference to the format - I'd of done top 64 straight matchplay knockout. So what if some of the 'big' names go out for 1 bad round. Most events here if you have a bad session your Olympics is over. I agree that non golfing people will find this a little dull. But non stop coverage over 4 days on the BBC will do me perfect. Even if the commentators are a bit annoying. Like when they refer to putts being driven past the hole.

On one hole I returned from the kitchen to the commentator saying he driven this 7 feet past the hole. He missed the 7footer and said tapped in for bogey. What was it? A par 2?

Wiesberger has been tweeting photos of all the wildlife and said there hasnt been a mosquito in sight.

Who do you fancy to win the gold medal?

I've had a flutter on 6 players, all e/w, who i hope will do well

Gregory Bourdy 66/1
Thongchai Jaidee 66/1
Kiradech Aphibarnrat 66/1
Graeme DeLaet 66/1
Nicolas Colsaerts 50/1
Thomas Pieters 50/1

Would like to see the GB lads do well of course..

Good starts from delaet colsaerts pieters and bourdy after 1 round..
Hope they keep it up today

Is the course too easy and short? 9 birdies from the leader makes it look that way. Maybe need to get the flags into tougher to get at spots on the greens rd 2.

Yeah the commentators are a bit mince

Golf's been entertaining to watch though & caught Rose's HIO live which was good to see

Kinda hoping the winner is a player who only got a spot due to the absence of a higher ranked player with 'issues'

edit: meant to add, that's a lot of sand in dem' bunkers, good to see players having to get a bit creative to get out

Apparently theres a lot of stones in the bunkers so they had to implement a ruleing allows players to remove them, kinda strange for such a high profile event.Pretty impressive golf course though that is due to become a muni for the locals after the Olympics, lucky them :D

yeah, hope they enjoy it and I think that'll be one of the markers to indicate whether golf should have been there. If the course is still in use in 5 years then I think it helps vindicate its inclusion (I was in Athens about 5 years after theirs and already clear that venues were falling into disuse)

I imagine playing golf there post Olympics might be a bit like having a neon arrow pointing at you saying RICH PERSON, rob me
