Golf in Portugal

Evening Gents,
I've got a holiday booked in May to go to Ferragudo in Portugal. Some how, the missus is letting me play 2 rounds while we're out there. Can anyone suggest any coureses in the region (i'm not keen in driving too far) for a reasonable price? I'be searched the net but there's loads to choose from so I'd rather go on a recommendation.

Also, Would you book them direct or go through an agency?

Pinta and Gramacho resort is a 3/4 mile drive from Ferragudo and are 2 fine courses.

I would be inclined to book direct with Pestana group I did last year in June and booked through Emanuel who was very helpful.

Also not too far (15 min drive) is Penina which is a cracking track but very tough!

If I can help you any further let me know as I spend a lot of time in Carvoeiro just along the road so know the area well.

Reckon in may 50 euros for Pestana and maybe 75 penina.

Palmares is a nice course not too far away. Great views and contrasting front/back 9. Vale da Pinta is probably better but like many couses winds it's way through building sites and empty apartments for much of the time. One worth trying is Silves, only been open a couple of years and we found it enjoyable and good value.

As for booking we pre-booked online and had no problems. If you are on your own you will usually be joined up but that's probably a plus.

DO NOT touch Palmares with a barge pole....I was there last week and it is shut...they are supposed to be re opening spring 2010 with a 3rd 9 holes added down by the shore but there is not a hope in hell of the place being open before mid to late 2010 due to suprise suprise cashflow problems....it is an utter mess even the original holes....disgusting.If they do get it right though the new 9 look like they could be awesome.

Edited to say Pinta and Gramacho are anything but a building site....no villas or apartments are being worked on, all are finished but yes many are empty but no building going on apart from up at the Leadbetter Academy which is well away from your golf.

I Played Palmares a couple of years ago and loved it. I've just looked at Gremacho and Pinta and they are 90 euro's which seeing as I'm getting 2 rounds in takes it over my budget. I can't play a hard track as my partner will stuggle and not enjoy it which I don't want.

Dodger, Do you have any advise where to go and eat near Ferragudo?I went to Bergau a couple of years ago and loved it.

I've got Alto course open at the minute but this looks more like a complex which I'd rather not do.

Loads of quality,Inside Cafe just up the road is great,l'Orange your side of Carvoeiro is another great place...I will pm you 2mo with a few places near you....The beach restaurant just outside Ferragudo... Rei das Praias is situated on the Praia Caneiros beach and is bloody superb!

Sounds good to me, Some of the places in Burgau were superb so if they are as good as them then that's fine with me.
