I still have my Macgregor (jumbo) M095t persimmon driver and MS-5 persimmon 3 wood which I take out and use sometimes, the really striking thing for me is how low they go, but they feel amazing to hit.

As already mentioned iron wise it has been blades all the way with the exception of a breif slip into Maxfli Revs during the late 90s.
Mizuno XR3's - Slazenger Challenge - Mizuno MS Originals - Mizuno TP 11's - Mizuno TP 19's - Maxfli Revs - Mizuno TP 11's again - Mizuno MP 32's and MP68's on order

just typing there names brings back memories

Mine were a set of Pinseeker blades from my Mum's club book, something like £2:40 for 40 weeks!!

Ball of "choice" was the Dunlop 65i, although if i found a Wilson Ultra I thought I was a pro!!

There used to be 2 different size balls one uk (1.62) and one US (1.68) merged in the early to mid 80's i think we now use the American ball

Yes we do. Early 80's when 1.62 stopped.

My early memories of golf gear are from about 1979-81. I started out with a mixture of old clubs before my grandfather bought me a set of McGregor Tourney irons. The were a forged cross between a blade and a cavity as I remember and were great. I was always gutted that I lost the 5 iron somewhere.

The two woods I had back then were a 1.75 wood and a 4 wood. These were two of the best clubs I have ever owned. The one and three quarter (yes - that is what was stamped on it!) was a solid persimmon Bobby Locke club with a solid resin insert in the face. I found it in an Uncle's barn and it was a mess. We got the assistant pro at my club to refurbish and re-shaft it and it was a magnificent wood when finished. I could hit it miles even though I was only 10-14 years old and regularly outdrove adult playing partners. I traded it in for a Tour Burner when I was about 15 and have regretted it ever since.

The 4 wood I had was a laminated Slazenger that must have been 25 years old when I got it. It was a firm favourite for years. The head cleaved in two as I hit a ball with it when I was about 15 and I remember being in tears stood in the middle of the fairway as a result!

My other early memories are of a Mizuno Pro Tour driver that Mark Roe gave to me. It was a superb club and I still have it. It still goes well when you compare it to modern clubs too but it just isn't as easy to hit.

Last memory is of a Mizuno Pro 1 iron. I used to think I was Sandy Lyle with that club and could get it to go reasonably well with a 60% swing! It didn't half hurt the hands when you hit a poor one though!

Happy memories.... :)

My first set of brand new irons were "Ram Tom Watsons" and cost me just under £200.00 for the irons and 3 woods.
Add a nice burgundy red & white crocodile skin effect Ram bag and I was cooking on gas

It was a long time ago so can't remember exactly how big it was, but it was quite heavy!! Had "RAM" down the side in big gold letters.
I looked a right nonce with it when it was brand new, my brother told me to go and roll it in some mud to dirty it up a bit

My first set were Mcbrad irons, they were shocking if I remember rightly. I think they were a cheepo set back in the eighties. I lost a few heads when they flew off. i just took them back to the shop and they gave me a replacement.

I remember the Ram tour bag. I've still got my persimmon 3 wood at my mums that my parents had made especially for my 18th by the old pro from London Scottish. It was a thing of beauty and I could easily hit it 240 on the dry common in summer even with a balata.

I also remember some of the different ball designs. Anyone remember the Dunlop marathon DDH or Kasco golf balls

I had a really poor quality junior half set, with this weird wood that looked like a persimmon type shape but was made of some kind of alloy and my brother gave me a RAM zebra putter. When I grew out of them my Dad bought me 1,3 and 5 Ladies Fazer Flair woods, the shafts were like rubber. I also had a set of Howson Hippo (I think they were called) irons which I couldn't hit at all.
Thinking back it makes me really appreciate what I have now.

When I started playing about ten years ago I bought a set of Alliance clubs with graphite shafts with thick grips. A Pro-gen driver that I could never hit, and an old blade style
brass coloured putter.
Somebody also gave me a shoe-box full of golf balls, trouble is they were no good as the old style smaller balls. Surprised nobody has mentioned before, anybody know when size was changed?

'twas mentioned by Freddie earlier.

Seamlessly segueing to another post.... all this old equipment that was, by today's standards, so difficult to use and the average club handicap has hardly changed?? :D

For those statisticians out there, are we really talking about the average h/cap or the mean, or whatever?
