Was just reading a previous post about Swilken golf clubs, and it took me back - my first clubs were Slazengers, cant remember the models and Ryder woods, all kitted out in a Dunlop bag.
And the balls I used to use were
Dunlop Warwick, Penfold,Molitor, rejects with red or black dots, Dunlop 65s, Slazengers, and I am sure I used some Uniroyal balls....cant have been that bad I got down to 5 with it all...can anyone else remember brands/models from yesteryear????

When I was 12 (1982) I used to cherish a Slaznger B51 golf ball I found at the club I have now joined and was afraid to use it incase I lost it. It looked brand spanking and had a blue tint to it.

I was partial to playing an Altus ball back in the late 80's.
Spalding Tour Editions were a good find, Greg Norman used to play them late 80's, one of the first balls to have a solid core but with good stopping properties too, ended the 'smiley face' balata ball.

Started off with a set of Petron Impala (well a 1//2 set) and built it up club by club. Wilson blue ridge were my original ball of choice and then progressed onto proper balls (well pinnacles). As I got better I got a set of Ben Sayers Ray Floyd blades and finally got a set of Slazenger B51 blades which were awesome. In between I acquired some maxfli australian blades but they were too temperamental. Great when hit probably but beasts if you were out. I use to like the slazenger B51 ball too until I thought titleist balata was the way to go.

I also had a drawer full of pringles (great when I was a football casual a few years later) and several pairs of top end shoes including a pair of patent black Dexters (what happened to them). I even had a matching Slazenger tour bag and practice ball bag with my name on. It looked great until I started hitting shots !!!!

My 1st set were a set of Palm Springs....cavitys,I reckon they must have been a pretty early cavity backed iron I reckon.
Fav club was a Spalding Tour Edition Persimmon Driver which had a boron shaft in it....christ that was a wonderful tool!

Started hacking with a 1/2 set of Slazengers in the early 90's and progressed to a full set of Howson DJ100's. Not the best ever but got me to a 12 handicap.
Then I had a set of TopFlite Tour irons as used on Tour by Peter Baker and Ronan Rafferty. A big step up for me - think Dunlop cheapys to Ping i15's!! Also got hold of some Callaway Steelhead fairways and a Great Big Bertha driver. Sheer heaven and only recently found replacements that work as well. The GBB was something special.

If you'd like a replacement, I'll put one aside for you....

I have quite a few old balls....

I started playing with a beastly set of Slazenger Blades from the 1970s. Awful. Not as bad as the woods though....

The only thing I can remember about my first clubs is they were blades and had Peter Thomson's name on the back.

The last set I remember buying before my current ones, was off the second-hand rack at a golf store for about £50. They were 'Petron Pure Blade', and I still have them in the shed.

I dont really care about clubs from yesteryear, however!!!

I remember having a navy blue slazenger V neck jumper and I wore that with pride, thought I was Seve with that jumper on, I was a junior and I strode about the club like a cock! I probably looked like a total cock as well! Hahaha

It was a magic jumper, if they brought them out again I'd buy one!

Believe it or not, the first clubs I used in the early 60s had hickory shafts! I still have these balls although I couldn't afford them when I started playing.

Ive played a bounce game with a Commando before and all i can say is that it was interesting. Less distance, quite a lot of spin and they fly at funny angles or mines did anyway.

Anyone use a commando? and, I've still got my original Lee Trevino blade putter.

Yes Harvey i have used the Commando fantastic memories. Like Homer my first set was Petron Imparla, then went on to get a set of Doug Sanders i didn't know if thet were better or not i just liked them because they were new.

My first bag was made of leather. It had a pocket for balls & tees etc and the hood folded down the side and doubled as a place to mkeep your waterproofs. The strap was leather with only a small section of padded strap for your shoulder. It must have weighed about 7-8lbs when dry and if it got soaked it took about a week to dry out. You had to give it a good coating of dubbin every so often.

Ah,......those were the days ;)

I still have my Wilson Staff persimmon driver, it looks smaller than a current 3 wood.....still can't believe i actually used it!
It never launched the ball much higher than 15-20 feet in the air, carry was about 200yds but the ball would then bounce and roll another 50-60 yds!!!

I bet an hour on the range with it now would sharpen your ball striking as you couldn't get away with mis-hits like the modern driver!

My first clubs were a second hand set of Eric Brown's irons and Slazenger woods. When i got to single figures in the mid 70s i was treated to a set of MacGregor Tourney Custom irons, which were about the best blades around at the time

At same time i purchased a ping anser putter which i still have.Always played with Lynx woods, and still have them in the attic, and used them up until two years ago.

Started off playing with Commando's,and Warwicks, but when i got better always used Slazenger B51,s which i seem to remember came in an individual box, rather than just a wrapper.
