Golf ettiquette

I accept the two ball probably feel they can't help holding me up since it's the group infront of them causing the problems so them not letting me through isn't a massive issue for me. It's the fourball infront I have the main issue with.

If it was one fourball in front then yes, cause for issue. But as others have stated if it was a society outing or the course was just busy in general then it's just grin and bear it time.

Losttheplot,

Just had a look at your link to the club. as a resort type course, you're always going to get heavy traffic with outings, corporate golf and societies.

IMO the operators are making you pay a hefty annual sub in the knowledge that they're generating a substantial income from golf members, but their business model will need the visitors to top up the coffers.

There's a club near me that has been advertising recently, same sort of set up, I wouldn't go near it as a member unless they paid me. the societies and corporate golf will always hold more clout than the poor memebrs.

at my course some one on there own as no standing on the course been let through and so on,should have joined the 2 ball and meet 2people who you could have gone out with again

Patshull is a golf course geared for members and corporate visitors/socities so when I joined I had a chat with the club manager and asked various questions including about socities and he assured me it's not an issue.

Luckily I pay monthly direct debit so if I find too many socities on during the week (which is when I play most my golf) I can up and leave to pastures new.

When I was talking to the 2 ball infront I got the distinct impression I wasn't really welcome to join them so I didn't feel comfortable to ask the question. Not sure if it was northern accent that put them off me :) :) :)

Problem is, Golf Clubs now rely on societies for income - falling memberships etc plus they generate catering and bar revenue. No memeber likes to see societies filled with casual/non-golfers hacking up the course, but the fact of life is that its a necessity for survival.
I always pop in to see the Pro before I tee off - mainly to say hi, and also see if there are any groups on the course that would hold me up, if so i would lose a few holes and jump on ahead of them if possible.
Dont knock the societies too much, clubs need them unfortunatly.

there are societies, then there are societies. Friday afternoons I've come across the best and the worst I think. One or two - and it is rare, will let a singleton through, most see it as their right to start as a group and finish as a group, they won't even let each other through, hence the occasionals and highcappers being sent out last.

our society has adopted a rule that a slower group has to let a faster group through, no option - the faster group doesn't have to wait to be called if they are clearly held up. we can now happily mix the handicaps (tbh we always did) knowing everyone will find their pace - of course there are still those who think it demeaning if you have to give way.

I'm quite surprised about how many people still think a single player has no rights on the course.

This is from the R&A's rule book...

Priority on the Course
Unless otherwise determined by the Committee, priority on the
course is determined by a group’s pace of play. Any group playing a
whole round is entitled to pass a group playing a shorter round. The
term “group” includes a single player.

but it's this Unless otherwise determined by the Committee that creates the differences and the problems, and perpetuates the myths.
do you think this might be another of the conundrums caused by the R&A trying to link too much that the intent gets lost? Could they have meant that the Committee could determine priority on the course but not what constitutes a group?
