Right I was wondering, what proportion of regular club members play the game purely for leisure and recreation and to be social, compared to those who play purely for competition.

It seems that the majority of members at my club seem so competition orientated that they forget their social skills. I admit that for some people being quiet and getting their head down is how they focus and perform best but surely being completely unsocial during a round isn't enjoyable ??

For me competition golf is the main attraction however it drives me mad when you get some guy in your group who thinks he is the next tiger and ignores you for the whole round.

Opinions?

Also what is more satisfying draining a 30ft putt or smashing a drive dead straight down the fairway ?

Bit of both really, certainly look to be sociable but the banter is very much toned down for competitions. During the winter none of our comps are qualifiers so tend to be far more social out of season. The one advantage of playing in your own groups at my old club is that you could play a comp with people who suit what you are looking for, be it chat and banter or head down and serious.

As far as my golf is concerned there is no difference between Social Golf and Competition Golf.
I'm out there to play as well as I possibly can, to post as good a score as I can.
I'll be sociable along the way regardless of the status of the round.

Agreed.

White tees or yellow tees, it's still a game of golf.
