Golf club lust

I would really like a Scotty Cameron putter. A GoLo 5.

However there is no way I would spend that sort of cash on a golf club.

I've wanted the X5 for about a month now, I have £800 lying around in my account that I can't spend and it's horrible :(

:D:D
Not sold on the looks TBH Jim but tunctionslity over form definitely.
The Bettinardi is beautiful but not working well.

i just picked up an X5 for you Greig, it was on sale in the local range £110, in excellent condition, though it looks like you are sorted now, so had better keep it for myself;)

Everything in my bag at the moment is relatively new and im happy with, If i had the money I would buy some Vega Wedges as someone here hs previously stated. One of the guys at my club has an old set and they are rusty as an old p*sscan and look incredible. Just gonna have to be satisfied with Cleveland RTX 2.0s with my budget at the moment.

But this is what I don't understand Snelly.
You would gladly pay over £300.00 for a days golf at Sunningdale and consider that a "bargain" but wouldn't spend it on a golf club that would last you years and years.

It is just a question of perception. I think that a day at Sunningdale is good value for money. You get to play on two of the best golf courses in the UK, if not Europe, dare I say the world?! Everything about the day is perfect from the welcome from the starter to the condition of the course to the bread and butter pudding. All awesome. One of the finest golf clubs you could wish to visit. You absolutely get twice as much from 36 holes at Sunningdale than you would at a much lesser course.

But a putter? How much should it cost? Much more than a decent iron? Same thing really and yet one of my irons costs about £75. Maybe a bit more thought goes into the design of a putter though? Maybe the manufacturing process is more labour intensive? Assuming both are the case, then let's double the price so £150 then?

But no, the putter in question is £190 more than one of my absolutely brilliant, beautiful irons! Why? Prestige, marketing, cachet? It is certainly not performance related. It isn't three times more performant in terms of how it does it's job than my 7 iron that is for sure.

So why the price tag? I am not sure exactly but what I can say is that in my opinion, paying that much more for something without getting any more for your money is a complete rip-off - shocking value for money. That is why I won't buy one. Not until it is second hand and five years old.

This is something I have discussed with my golfing friends, especially as some of us have decided to play a few more prestige clubs (Sunningdale, Swinley, etc). No right answer but one thing that did emerge was that playing a top rated course isn't just about the day but the fact that the memories of it do last, so you do get pleasure from it well after the event, whereas a club will get used and lose value over time.

Might be worth discussion on another thread.

It's like...
do I spend £1,000.00 on a weeks golfing holiday to Turkey or the Algarve or spend £1,000.00 on a years membership?
Personally I would rather spend £300 on a new putter (if that's what I really wanted) than a day at a top golf course.
I'd hate to go to Sunningdale, spend all that money, and play like an absolute tosser.

Maybe the putter is three times more expensive than your 7 iron is because you use it 3x the amount of times you use said iron?

Very erudite.

In fact, that is why I said a putter isn't three times more performant in terms of how it does it's job rather than how often. If the frequency of use had any bearing at all then chipping clubs would be more expensive than irons as well and they are not.

But the value to the individual could be, I could be awful at hitting a 7 iron but a fantastic putter and that could be because i feel more confident with my £300 putter than with my £100 7 iron. I happen to be distinctly average with both, but its all subjective. Nobody is right or wrong here.

Fantastic putters can putt well with a stick of rhubarb. The cost of their putter has no bearing on their skill level.

If they had been Nippon shafts I would have had them. He has a set of 59s in mint condition as well that I am doing well to resist.

Ah, the old 'if it/tey had/were .... I'd be all over it/them like a rash' truism!

Possibly the most common response to For Sale ads on 1 or 2 US sites!!

...
I'd hate to go to Sunningdale, spend all that money, and play like an absolute tosser when I can (and do) do that for free any time I like at my own club!

Fixed that for you Smiffy!

And doesn't seem like Sunningdale is going to benefit from your presence anytime soon either! Shame, as it's a wonderful experience and, in fact, while it's always better to play well than poorly, the quality of golf is quite low on the priority list of such experiences imo!
