Golf at the Olympics

Rugby World Cup
Any of the Grand Slam tennis tournaments
Any of golf's majors

All bigger than the Olympics certainly as far as the competitors are concerned.

You might be right about basketball though.

NBA Champs is bigger for the majority of the players

Agreed but I'd maintain that an international rugby player would prize a World Cup Medal a long way above an Olympic gold medal for rugby. We're talking about the pinnacle of a given sport regardless of format.

But they aren't the same players playing the two games? You have 7's players, and 15's players. Given that 7's has yet to be in there, it's hard to tell how well it will go down. I wouldn't be surprised if on the 7's circuit, the Olympics becomes THE medal, just as I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't

the Olympics is in danger of losing it's purpose.
Which imo is to offer a once every 4 years opportunity for sports people to win a gold medal that is seen as the pinnacle of their sport.
To include rugby, tennis, football, golf where it is obvious that winning the gold medal is not as good as winning a major title in that sport demeans the Olympics, and it saddens me to see it happening.
The Olympics is a celebration of sport, for sports that see the event as the absolute height of achievement within their field, and for the rest of us, for 2 weeks to marvel in the skills of the competitors in sports that normally we wouldn't walk across the street to watch.

Strokeplay golf can be thunderingly boring - what it's like if you don't understand the game and don;t have the instantly recognisable man-v-man tussle of matchplay that anyone can understand...well - total TV turn-off IMO

Just think of it as another major, to be held every four years.

I don't mind the Olympics when they are the pinnacle of the sport, such as athletics, archery, shooting, etc. When they aren't, I lose interest. To me, somebody being a "major winner" has a lot more fizz than a "gold medalist". I tend to shut off when I hear the word "medalist" anyway, the Olympics aren't something that interest me at all.

Olympics as an amateur bastion is a long gone historical notion. Not sure golf has a place in the Olympics but as it is I'll watch it. With only a two man team we should get some interesting play. May not be the worlds elite (who knows who'll play) but should still be good. Anyone know about the course? Isn't it where Faldo hosted his World Masters series for the talented up and coming youngsters

Sport is driven by money, TV is money focussed and the Olympics is the same. The horse event, sailing etc. etc. requires huge investment so its long left find the world's best 'individual' behind.

The training regimes for individual track events has gone the same way.

Golf won't work because it should be a Team competition which, because of the possible number of teams, would require too many knock out stages and be boring for general public viewers.

But I thought that first and foremost the Olympics isn't a team event

The only team sports I can think of are those that can't be/aren't played by an individual or those that already have individual events/variants already in the Olympics

I cant think of a sport at the Olympics that's primarily played by individuals but is only in the Olympics as a team sport

If after its reintroduction golf proves a hit and can establish itself as an individual Olympic sport I'm sure a team event will be added in addition to its inclusion as an individual sport

Yep, spot on.

Totally agree.

Not teams as such but it's possible that countries could be represented by as many as 4 players.

The course is being built for the Olympics by Gil Hanse.
