Golf at the Olympics

Boring strokeplay tournament, just like almost every other tournament of the year.
No idea about world rankings, I'm guessing no.

I believe it should have been a purely amateur event

Olympics should always be the pinnacle of a person sport - it won't be for golf

I don't think golf has any place at the Olympic Games, I won't watch it (unless it turns into a 4 man Texas Scramble for amateurs with a handicap of 18 or more :)) and I won't give a toss who wins the medals. If you're going to have golf you might as well have snooker and darts as well.

Amateur golf is not the pinnacle of golf, professional golf is. Anyone can turn pro, and the amateurs that are good enough do so.

Amateur only Olympics is a boat that has long since sailed. Amateur sport is historically the preserve of the rich who could afford to pursue a near professional level of dedication to sport because they were rich enough not to work.

With amateurs in Olympic golf it could be the pinnacle of their career as an amatuer

But it's the same reason why I think tennis shouldn't be allowed in the Olympics.

Golf at the Olympics - rubbish. I fear that many will turn on to watch - not have much of a clue about what's going on - and determine that - just as they thought - golf is a stupid and boring game played by folk wearing naff clothes. But then there's always Rory (except he's playing for The Republic)

The Olympics stopped being an amateur event years ago. Do you think Mo or Usain are not millionaires? Golf at the Olympics is a nonsense but hey ho it is there now. Would be better as a team event than strokeplay. That has made it even duller and less worthwhile to watch.

At the Olympics there are over 300 gold medals available! How we are supposed to 'get up' for 300+ winners is beyond me. Golf is now there for another irrelevant event to the Olympics along with rugby I believe. Agree sports that have championships in place already that are bigger then the Olympics shouldn't be there, that includes golf along with rugby, basketball, tennis, football etc etc. Money driven nonsense.

Agree that it should have been knockouts with a team of two representing your country, how you select the two is tricky but could just leave it at rankings (unless you don't have two in them!)

Should have been foursomes in the early rounds, could've played two matches a day easily. Teams with one or both players in the top 50 rankings get an automatic buy to later rounds. Quarter final stage onwards played as Fourball betterball.

I think there would be more pride in playing for your country as a team against another country than in a 72 hole strokeplay medal. The Ryder Cup usually gets more interest than pretty much every other event for the same reason.

Would think only football has a championship bigger than the Olympics or at least an equal...

I'd have thought that on its first appearance (or reappearance) it must be stroke-play

Why would you introduce a sport to a global audience in a format that isn't the most popular one at both professional and amateur level and the format they're most likely to play if they took their viewing interest any further and actually wanted to play a game. Fine after a few more appearances it can introduce the match-play & team formats etc but the first offering couldn't really be anything else
