Golf balls in winter

Just asking, do most people change the ball they use in the summer to the one they use in the winter ?. If so what are the benefits.

Currently I've been using a ProV1 which i've used for the most part of the season and wondered if a hard ball would benefit in the winter.

You're not going to beat a pro V by much, if any, in terms of distance when using a 'distance ball'. Some People tend to change balls for the simple reason that the extra spin that premium balls give you is negated by soft conditions in winter and there's no point in playing with, and possibly losing, a 3 quid ball when one at a quid will suffice.

I've been using a ProV1 over the summer and have switched to pick-ups for the Winter League, doesn't save me any shots but it does save me money from lost balls!

Use the same ball throughout the year but mainly use old ones during the winter.

Mark Crossfield did a test when someone asked about winter balls and switching to a harder ball does nothing at all. I just play the same ball all year but will use pick ups more in the winter and that's purely down to the leaves and easily lost balls.

I play with Ad333 in summer and then play with Ad333 grade A lake balls in the winter,lake balls approx 50p each cheaper.

I use pro v in the season, but in winter will use a cheaper ball, just bought 3 doz mizuno d201 for £40, quite a good ball all in all

You don't need a degree in accountancy understanding that you save money ... Why do you feel that you have to change? Is this a Summer/Winter thing for some of you guys or does Easter and Autumn creep in?

Use the Bridgestone 330s in summer and just changed to the Bridgestone FIX to try and minimise lost distance due to the cold weather and extra layers of clothing. Only downside is sometimes losing control of the distance I hit the short irons.

I played with a Pro V front nine yesterday and an NXT tour which I pulled as a provisional on the 10th. Ended up with the NXT as the Pro V was never seen again. I found it stopped well on the greens and putted ok and it was definitely a few yards longer. I am someone who will change in the winter usually to AD333 or NXT to try and eek a few extra yards, being arguably one of the shortest hitters on the forum

I average about 235. I need to keep it in play as often as possible as a result. Not always easy to do

Is that carry ?

That's a decent hit still especially keeping it in play.

Sadly not. Carry usually about 220-225. Little roll at the moment

I normally play Pro V1x but have switched to new Srixon AD333 for this winter. They don't feel quite as nice but the Pro V1x's were spinning far too much on the soft winter greens. The AD333's are just the job and much cheaper to play while the greens are so soft.

That's pretty good carry especially keeping it straight and pretty much what the majority of amateurs hit

Anywhere between 220 - 250 carry is prob the norm.

I normally play a Pro V1 in summer but I'm trialling the Pro V1x over the winter.

So far, I'm loving it. I may have to sell the 6 dozen brand spanking new Pro V1's I have to replace with the V1x :lol:

I've always used a mixture of lake balls & found balls, and found in the recent cold snap that they felt like concrete.

Not being the longest driver in the world, average 200, 210 with roll, I had a look for a better feeling ball and bought a box of Titlelist DT Solo on the advice of the pro. So far they have been a revelation. In half a dozen rounds, I've lost one ball, mishit into the lake. I'm driving consistently more straight which is giving a little better distance as confidence builds.
The biggest difference, though, is with the putter. Straighter, better roll & feel leading to less putts overall... win! win!

No more lost & founds for me... I now know what people mean when they talk about feel.

I swap to cheaper (free) balls in the winter all down to cost as I don't see the point in playing a £3 ball when they're getting lost in the fairway and light rough (leaves and plugging)!
