GM Titleist 913 fitting day

Just a fabulous day from start to finish.

After early intros, I was up for my fitting with Henry. The next 3/4 hr or so really opened my eyes to what can be done in a fitting session.......after a few warm up clips with my 6iron, Henry asked what ball I used - all subsequent shots that were measured with Trackman were hit with prov1x balls - "there's no point fitting with a ball which you don't hit!"

My R11 gave some reference numbers and matched up with what I expected , low, necky cuts :(. Launch angle was way down around 6* with ridiculous amounts of spin. Short with no roll out.

As I cut everything, Henry dismissed the D3 as it sits open and there was no boundary fence down the right side of the range to keep the balls on the planet!! So, D2...first up with a 70g shaft as the weight may bring the spin rate down, which it did but the launch was still too low giving a chest high runner!

A Graphite Design YSQ was next in, a lower kick point which should help the launch angle, which it did.....noticeably!! This went to one side as a real possibility.
A couple more shafts followed which didn't do anything so back to the YSQ but this time with a 8.5 head but, with it being on the super hook A3 setting, the loft was around 10.5.........bingo!!! Launch up, spin down = more carry and more roll but a much tighter dispersion.....win, win, win!!!:)

After lunch, Leigh hosted a tour whilst our clubs were being made. A surprising amount of manual labour with the assembly on the stock and the custom lines. A complete Aladdins cave for us all, as Ethan said, the supermarket sweep just wouldn't have been long enough!!

It was great to meet another 3guys from the forum. A huge thank you to GM for the opportunity for the forum and for picking me for it. Leigh and all the Titleist guys were fantastic hosts, very knowledgable and really willing to share the inside stories on a lot of things.

Just a fantastic day. Very much appreciated GM, thank you :)

I love my Graphite Design YSQ though I am not sure its the same one as yours as mine is mid kick, but a truly lovely shaft!

Nice write up! thanks.

It does look a bit suspicious, to be fair. In my defence, I was very happy with the Diamana D+ and was more than happy to take that one.
Only joshing mate ;) For a company like Titleist that upgrade is peanuts and you can now boast to having the same shaft as the Emperor-in-Chief :) Really pleased for you, especially given the amount of helpful advice you have given me and others on here over the years

Ethan. I know your the shaft expert but was the Oban one you knew about or was there a different one you thought was for you ?

I knew about the Oban, which came out 3 or so years ago, and knew it to be a smooth but stable shaft, a bit like the Matrix Xcon, which I also like. So I wasn't surprised that it played well for me. If I had been paying for the shaft, though, I might have settled for the Diamana D+ which performed almost as well. The Oban was a bit better, certainly, but the Diamana was also great.

The shaft I was most interested to try was the Tour AD-DI, which is getting a lot of Tour use. I didn't ask for it, the fitter chose it, but it was no better than my current one and I hooked and smothered almost all the shots I hit with it.

Did you awake with a stiff shaft or regular?

Cracking write up guys and totally jealous, once again another excellent GM opportunity passed me by but I will keep trying :(

When is a shaft deemed to be a good fit for you? I'm curious because if you are unlucky you can have 5 bad swings with a shaft when testing and it may not be the shafts fault. How do they distinguish a poor shot from a ill fitting shaft? or with a great drive how much of that was due to the shaft you were trying at the time?

Hopefully you won't have 5 in a row, but even if you do, the fitter can see some of the issues that are causing your bad shots and may be able to start to get an idea what shafts are totally unsuitable and maybe some that might be worth trying. You need to tell him about how you normally play, and if you can do so honestly, so much the better.

In terms of a good fit, it is partly numbers - the right launch angle, spin rate, trajectory and distance along with your report on how it feels. Then he can try a similar shaft to see if it gives similar results, or a different type to see if it bursts the bubble.

I hit a few snappers with my own first, then with the first Titleist shaft, the trajectory was utterly different, and not just what is a good shot for me, nor simply the effect of warming up, but a nice mid height shot with a fade, which I rarely get, and good distance. That was the Diamana D+, basically the new version of Kaili. The Oban was about the fifth shaft we tried, but a couple in between he said were a different approach to the problem, which didn't do the trick. To be honest, the one I was kinda hoping would fit was the Tour AD-DI, but it was no good at all, worse than my current one in terms of hooking.

So it is partly science, partly art!

Ethan, did you chat to the fitter about shaft weight or did he site that for you?

He did say at one stage that a heavier tip stiff shaft was an option. I think the choice was between normal weight (60s gram range) and some torque so the clubface held open, or a heavier shaft (75g or so) that I couldn't whip into a hooky place so fast. The former model seemed to work best.
