Can't really add too much to Ethan's very detailed write up but would like to add my thanks to everyone at Titleist & GM. The whole day was fantastic from start to finish. The fitting guys were brilliant and I've come away with a 12* driver (something that I would have never considered off the shelf) that seem to have cured my rather large fade!

Thanks again Titleist and GM!

Great write up Ethan sounds like you guys got top class treatment as usual from GM, come on 19th hole a wee bit of effort is needed 4 posts and you get a top prize like that.

Sounds like a great day.

Oban shafts certainly have a solid reputation - and are rather distinctive colours too! And Titleist heads certainly seem to be 'players' ones, The adjustability certainly seems to have been done the way I'd want to see - independently so I can decrease/increase the loft on its own depending on conditions.

Though I'd be interested to know how shaft that's not massively different from the current one, can change your occasional duck-hooks (a swing issue) into gentle fades. Or was there some fitting magic (preventing the overswing) in there as well? Does it also reflect badly on previous shaft selection? Or was that simply a 'learning process'?

Certainly a swing issue, an inside approach and too much hands, but even when I hit the PX Black well I couldn't really fade it.

The fitter didn't think the shafts were particularly alike, though. I hit the Diamana D+ and the Oban somewhat similarly, and the RIP not too much different - all pretty decent, but I hit the Motore F1 and the GD Tour AD-DI exactly the same as the PX Black. I think he thought the combination of very low torque and very tip stiff was not a great combination, so went for more torque with the Oban. I think it is somewhat like the Matrix Xcon shaft, feels smooth but you can hit it without fear of losing it left.

He also started with the A1 (standard) setting, but soon moved to the B1 (same loft, more fade bias).

Interesting to see you've gone with a ribbed grip, obviously happy with how it's set up. I've done the same thing with my 910 driver. I also tried loads of different shafts but settled on the RIP stiff.

Just a fabulous day from start to finish.

After early intros, I was up for my fitting with Henry. The next 3/4 hr or so really opened my eyes to what can be done in a fitting session.......after a few warm up clips with my 6iron, Henry asked what ball I used - all subsequent shots that were measured with Trackman were hit with prov1x balls - "there's no point fitting with a ball which you don't hit!"

My R11 gave some reference numbers and matched up with what I expected , low, necky cuts :(. Launch angle was way down around 6* with ridiculous amounts of spin. Short with no roll out.

As I cut everything, Henry dismissed the D3 as it sits open and there was no boundary fence down the right side of the range to keep the balls on the planet!! So, D2...first up with a 70g shaft as the weight may bring the spin rate down, which it did but the launch was still too low giving a chest high runner!

A Graphite Design YSQ was next in, a lower kick point which should help the launch angle, which it did.....noticeably!! This went to one side as a real possibility.
A couple more shafts followed which didn't do anything so back to the YSQ but this time with a 8.5 head but, with it being on the super hook A3 setting, the loft was around 10.5.........bingo!!! Launch up, spin down = more carry and more roll but a much tighter dispersion.....win, win, win!!!:)

After lunch, Leigh hosted a tour whilst our clubs were being made. A surprising amount of manual labour with the assembly on the stock and the custom lines. A complete Aladdins cave for us all, as Ethan said, the supermarket sweep just wouldn't have been long enough!!

It was great to meet another 3guys from the forum. A huge thank you to GM for the opportunity for the forum and for picking me for it. Leigh and all the Titleist guys were fantastic hosts, very knowledgable and really willing to share the inside stories on a lot of things.

Just a fantastic day. Very much appreciated GM, thank you :)

The big question is.....did you get into the 'special area' where they make the 'special clubs' for the tour guys ? ;)

Sounds like you all had a great day.
Thanks Mike for another memorable day

Bob

The workshop where our drivers were finished off for us is used for making up special orders and Tour player clubs. That is where the gold Vokeys for Rory were sitting and there were a few other special bits and pieces sitting around, such as some special edition True Temper shafts with a 'Team Europe' shaftband and some Circle T weights for Scotty Cameron Tour putters.

Don't be silly. That would involve a blind folded helicopter flight to a hollowed out volcano somewhere off the Japanese coast. In any case they would have been zapped by one of those memory eraser things they have in Men in Black.:D

No Muira heads lying around?

Nah, you're thinking of Taylor Made.

The guys from Titleist told us that the clubs their pros use are the same heads that we would buy. They may be re-measured to get exact specs and given different grinds or extra hot melt weighting or whatever, but basically they are the same. One exception can be the putter, and Scotty Cameron makes one-offs and special handmade putters for some players.
