Well, finally got around to going in for a free eye test today. My old place closed and another store has all their old info on people. As expected, I'm getting old. Slight cataracts involved.....I was hoping to maybe go laser, but I was told because of possible cataracts they wouldn't touch me most likely. If I were to get a pair it would be a decent sports style (Oakley?)....but the store wanted at least £150 for the lens and then the frames would put things in the £400-500 range. I'd rather not. Any recommendations that are less costly? I would imagine if I already have the eye test info that any place like specsavers, asda, etc could slap a decent pair of glasses together...yes? Evidently I wouldn't pass a driving vision test (although I could if I squint....is that against the test rules?). I have no trouble driving...only issue I usually have is driving at night (rarely any more) and reading signs...bit fuzzy until I squint. So I need a pair to drive, maybe play golf and to watch tv.

Damn.....got my first bug bite of the year yesterday on the course.

Had to go for first retest in years for reading glasses a few weeks ago. Usually pick oakley frames but spotted Under Armour metal framed ones I really liked and a bit cheaper too
Lightweight without feeling like they'll break and comfy for wearing all day. don't wear for golf but they dont feel like they'd move much doing that either

I bought my glasses from here, many years ago. it's time for another test and I'll be going back when I'm doubtless told the same as you!

No way I'm paying the sort of prices quoted on the high street

I had my bi annual eye check last Friday, I need a slightly stronger pair of reading glasses. I get them, and the test, from Specsavers. My head / ears don't suit regular armed glasses so I get the lightweight, sports frames, straight arms. Buy one, get one free. i went for specsavers own glasses, £100 for them both.

These will replace the two pairs I've had from them previously. Same style of glasses, Specsavers own again, they have both lasted 4 years without issue.

If you are new to glasses I would recommend going to an optician as they will be able to help you out and make sure you get glasses that are suitable. Both my wife and I use Specsavers and find they are very good at ensuring you get the best deal - sometimes by doing a bit of mix and match. Yes, you may pay a bit more than online but you will have the benefit of the aftercare which we have found is excellent.

Got my last set from glasses direct, local optician did my test and I uploaded the prescription to their website site.

Get the best lenses you can afford and the cheapest frames you like.

The varifocals with Kodak lenses were much better than the previous Specsavers ones.

I use

and have done so for around 8 years

Some of the 'extra' from High St stores are free with them e.g some thin lens.

Their real cheapies are only £6 which is good source for back up glasses. I often have pair of the cheapies when the order is just under free post to make it over.

They are so cheap I have one set of 3 glasses in the car, 2 pairs in the golf locker. various one in the lounge and for walks out and another 2 pairs in the bedroom.

Last few pairs have been Oakley’s.
Can’t remember the price of my latest pair, definitely under £150 tho.

What I don't get....quoting £150ish for the lens.....and then £200+ for the frame.

I've got a perfectly good Oakley frame in mint condition from a previous prescription spec. I could take that in and just buy the lens I've just been spec'd for... cha-ching! 🤓

Specsavers for me - last pair were Reebok

The big cost is the lens and thinning them

Glasses Direct are supposed to be very good
Asda opticians for me.
They do not charge a penny extra for thin lenses, varifocals or even tinting.
Second pair for half price.
Last year got 2 pairs of Nike ones for £180.

Wife uses Specsavers, I use vision express (get 30% off or something through work)

I also have a healthcare cash plan that I claim back all my glasses and dental costs so we go every 2 years (alternate years) to get new glasses and sunglasses each.

Think last year cost me £330 for 2 pairs of Armani exchange (one normal one sunglasses) which wasn't awful . Upgraded to transition lens for normal and polarised sunglasses

Always then get my old frames reglazed with the updated lens as I have to carry spare glasses for work as per my contract

I only get on with Ray-Ban frames.
I've been getting the same few pairs reglazed by Direct Sight for years.
Needed new frames this year so MrsA convinced me to use her local indie optician. They wanted over £400 for the frames I'd identified at the Ray-Ban shop with my latest prescription.
Then I found https://mojoglasses.com/ and got the frames I'd chosen with Zeiss prescription lenses for £151.
They have been great. Just checked and they have loads of Oakley frames.

One of my reasons for using Selectspecs is that with many frames standard lens are free.

They work the other way round - choose the frame ( they do most of the big name brands as well as cheap ones) and then add the lens cost according to the options chosen, e.g thickness and coatings. Their 2 for 1 on frames starts at a much lower cost.

Spec savers do it the same way.

Got talking with my wife just now about my getting glasses....which I will be doing....at least 1 pair to see how things go. My drivers license is up for renewal in a couple of years, do they even have some kind of check to see if you are blind or not? When I took my test they made me read a license plate that was in the parking lot (very American-like daft vision test in my opinion.....and yes, I'm American). In the US if I renewed my license I had to go in and they would have you look through a device to see if you can see decently. And......even if they did have a vision check when I renewed (this would be my first renewal, when I was working you didn't need a UK license).....is there a rule that says you can't squint?

For those who get their dandruff up easily.....I'm partially kidding, partially just curious.

There isn't a test but it is an offense to drive without correct glasses (or contacts) if you require them. £1000 fine (max) and 3 points. Think you just need to make a declaration when you renew but been a while so can't be sure.
