I've finally booked a gapping session as I've lost a lot of confidence in my distances, especially with my wedges.
It may be a real eye opener as my current estimated distances are with rollout but everyone knows that it's the carry distance that's crucial.
My current (estimated) carry distances are, I think, about .........

5 Iron 160yds
6 Iron 150yds
7 Iron 140yds
8 Iron 130yds
9 Iron 125yds
Wedge 115yds
Gap W 100yds
Sand W 85yds
Lob W 70yds

It'll be very interesting to see what my real yardages are.

How accurate are yours?

VIrtually the same although i'd guess my 9 , W and GW are five yards shorter. I think i'll go down the gapping session too to see what they come out especially as I'm due to receive a new (to me) set soon . :whoo:

Had mine done a couple of weeks back. Distances are my carry.

4 Iron 182yds
5 Iron 172yds
6 Iron 163yds
7 Iron 154yds
8 Iron 143yds
9 Iron 132yds
P Wedge 106yds
G Wedge 93yds
S Wedge 74yds

Those are the average, hit 5 shots each club, the best and worst removed and the middle three averaged. For my 5 iron I could hit it 190, but then again I could hit 150.

PW comes up a bit short doesn't it?? All your others are very similar to mine but I'd expect the PW to come in at 115-120.

I did a full short game gapping session the other night - I'm going to do my irons tonight hopefully. but here is where I believe they are.

Driver - 280y
3wood - 240y
hybrid - 210
--------------------
(irons are believed distances judging from rounds - tbc)
4 iron 200yds
5 Iron 190yds
6 Iron 180yds
7 Iron 170yds
8 Iron 160yds
9 Iron 150yds
--------------------
(these are full shot wedges - I also have 10/2, 9/3,8/4 swings)
Wedge - 135yds
52d W - 115yds
58d W - 85yds

Still got to strike the ball well though.

I'm looking at the raw data the pro emailed after my session.

Is your's on Trackman or GC2?

I have a hunch that it's Trackman, but I'll confirm tomorrow after the session.
Why do you ask?
Surely they both give the same data, therefore the same results ................ or is there something I'm missing?

When you do this do you go Driver to Wedges or Wedges to Driver?

I know, my irons are cavity back Mizuno 825 JPX Pro while my wedges are Cleveland RTX2 blades. The pro explained that if I was to move my irons to blades (not going to happen) or my wedges to Cavity back the gap would close. BUying new irons or wedges is not going to happen so as long as I know the distances I can accommodate my shots accordingly.

Ah ok. My iron set is 5-PW so the pitch is pretty in line with the rest of the irons (around 120). Then my GW is a blade type (RTX-3) which goes around 90-100 like yours. My SW is also part of my iron set though and that still only goes around 75.

The data that's presented to the customer is not necessarily actual readings but extrapolated from tables of databases. Obviously some measurements are done because other results need to be calculated from them.

Mine was GC2/HMT and the pro said that spin was "back-calculated" with Trackman, based on ball flight characteristics. TBH I'm not sure, nor am I sure that this is a bad thing and I certainly can't be bothered to find out atm.

One thing to come out of my session was that the 19* hybrid and 5 wood have near identical distance but different flight characteristics...

Are you due to have a sex change and just preparing for it? 🤣

Wedge to Driver.

A bit loaded but my pro has just switched to going Driver to wedge as he says people are too tired to hit a driver well at the end.

I guess it depends on the person being fitted of course but after hearing that I would probably want to go mid irons, driver, long irons, short irons, wedges.

I can get a swing going with the mid irons, then hit the longer clubs and end with some easy wedges

Is your pitching wedge not a match to your iron set Dave....??

For me, my wedges are my short irons.

The first thing to understand is that carry distances are very important for some golfers but merely a guide for others.
For me they have to be merely a guide because, on a launch monitor, I realised just how inconsistent my swing is ..................... shocking really, but the nature of the beast to a mid/high handicapper.

My estimated carry distances were;
5 Iron 160yds
6 Iron 150yds
7 Iron 140yds
8 Iron 130yds
9 Iron 125yds
Wedge 115yds
Gap W 100yds
Sand W 85yds
Lob W 70yds

My actual carry distances are;
5 Iron 175yds
6 Iron 165yds
7 Iron 160yds
8 Iron 145yds
9 Iron 135yds
Wedge 120yds
Gap W 110yds
Sand W 100yds
Lob W 85yds
All much further than I thought with the 7 Iron being particularly strong!!

I also tested my very erratic 9.5º driver and although distance and roll out were nothing exceptional, (225yds & 250yds), I was surprised that the launch angle was 15.5º and the backspin was measured at 2080rpm.
I may try my driver adjusted to 10.5º loft.

Oh, the machine was a GC2 HMT and we used a Srixon Soft Feel ball.
