Went to see the club pro to get a gapping session on my clubs, my swing is evolving for the better and I'm striking the ball better than I have for a good while, to the point where the distance I knew I could hit the ball is no longer valid, so I had the gapping session to see what's what.

For the most part the numbers I had in my head before starting were matched pretty much spot on and I'm quite happy with the 10 yards gap between my 4 to 9 iron, got a larger gap between 9 iron and pitching wedge as I go from a 9 Mizuno JPX 825-Pro to a Cleveland RTX2 wedge and while the lofts work out, the distances do not, but that's not really to much of an issue.

All in all I now know my carry distances and on firm course what the overall would be, so depending on what shot I want to play and the course conditions, in theory, as long as I get the line correct, hitting the green from distance should, I repeat should, become a more regular event.

Don't forget to factor in

Wind direction
Lie of ball ie, fairway / buried in rough / will affect contact and spin
Slope - either up hill or down hill and also left and right
Green above you / below you and also tilting one way or the other
Firmness of the green
Air temperature. Flys further when its warm.
The ball you are playing - can fly a premium ball closer to pin, must allow for more roll is not
How you are hitting on the day - take more club if consistently hitting slightly heavy.

At least you have one thing ticked off. ;)

Wow you certainly talk a good game :ears:

Sounds like your taking things serious for a change

During the session I hit the first few shots and John the Pro asked what my HC was, told him 19, his reply was "wow you don't hit is like a 19 handicapper", I replied, "I've got a game inside me somewhere, but I'm to inconsistent and my concentration tends to wander"

The only reason I've not got a lower HC is the aforementioned consistency and lack of concentration, if, big if, I could sort them out then with the way I know I can hit a ball I could take 2 or 3 maybe even 4 shots off my HC.

All the above happens on the course, if you don't know how far you hit a ball with any given club, then all the above is immaterial. Doing the gapping gets you your baseline, from which you then factor in the variables.

I was only joking with you. knowing your carry distances is essential. so is being honest with yourself. like how often you can make that carry of 170 with each strike.

As my clubs get longer my distance control goes down. Strike is compromised a bit. There are times when I am on the limit for my longest iron which is 6. I will drop down to hitting my 5 hybrid a little easier as I know I make more consistent contact with that ensuring strike but giving up a bit of accuracy.

Know your distances, know your limitations, play smarter golf.

I'm with you on this one, I play off 21 as I was having issues getting off the tee's at the time of putting my cards in...

I can hit the ball beautifully but there's always something in the chain of command that I forget to do be it stance, ball position, club selection, grip or just plain ole not concentrating on the shot in hand...

It has been said that on the odd occasion that I do manage to string it all together at the same time I'm usually on fire and I play more like a 15hc and am more than capable of giving a lot of the lower handicappers at our club a run for their money...

Anything that resembles some form of consistency would be nice...

i find it strange how people need a gapping session. i know exactly how far each club goes from experience of hitting that club. it's nice to have a session but it can only be accurate if you hit the sweet spot. any off centre hits are subject to many variables. as a 19 handicap do you find the centre of the face much? do you deliver the same dynamic loft at impact on a consistent basis?. i know i dont!

That's the point I was making above, I know I can hit a good ball and I know I can do it regularly, but just not regularly enough, I know what causes my duff shots and I know that is mainly down to lack of concentration.

The gapping session today was to confirm in my head what I suspected and now I know that X club will carry y distance and roll out to what the conditions at the time allow.
