Apolpgies in advance for length of this thread but looking for some gamesmanship stories and how they ended.

Played my 1st round in the club singles match play yesterday morning, we were slightly delayed in playing it as my opponent had been on holiday and rather than claiming it I got us an extension from the club as personally I'd rather win or lose by right rather than default.

But from the 1st tee my opponent started his gamesmanship by declaring if it had been me away he'd have claimed the game as he doesn't mind how he wins! It started on the 1st tee with that and with when I pushed my opening shot rift toward the trees, walking down the fairway he points out "you've only got 5mins to look I'll start timing you now"! Anyway didn't find the ball and have him the hole.

2nd tee he hits it up the fairway then just as I'm placing club behind ball to start my swing he pipes up "by the way this is a shot hole so I'm there for none". Much to his dismay though it didn't put me off and sent my shot sailing past his. This sort of thing plus banging of clubs, snide comments, random coughs on backswings continued round to the 5th where he birdied his "shot hole" taking great delight to bask in this.

6th tee I pulled one slightly amid another of his random coughs and his response ooh looks like another shot hole going to be won by him! The ball actually was only in semi rough off edge of fairway but not quite round dog leg so couldn't see pin, he was on the green in his nett 1 as he pointed out, I hit and 8 iron hoping for a flyer and hit it sweet but he said unlucky looks like you gone over the back that's a shame! Imagine my delight when we got over the brow of the hill to the green to see I'm 6" from the cup. Didn't get conceded though I had to hole it for a half.

At this point I thought whatever happens I will not lose to tool (insert massive expletive instead) or if I have to lose I'll make him beat me with his golf and not his games. I won the next 2 holes to square the game. The match then after that continued in holes exchanging with him winning shot holes with nett birdie every time and me winning non shot holes, there wasn't a halved hole between 9-17. All the while though his noises, comments etc carrying on with me looking at him and just smiling.

On the 16th he had a par putt to halve the hole it was only 2 feet and he was about to pick it up as I'd been conceding that length all way round and I just said "no I want to see that one" look on his face was a picture & wish I'd had my camera for the look after when he missed it to put me 1up for the 1st time.

Lead didn't last long as he got a shot on 17 which is a par 3 and we both made par so he won that with a shot. So to the last a par 5 where there are no shots! He puts it in the fairway and I made a horrific swing pulled straight left OOB! He sniggers and I can see a little fist pump going on as I reloaded and sent my 3 off the tee high and straight. He plays up short of water and turns round to me saying he'd expected to beat me with his shots but was happy it was going to be a non shot he won to beat me! On that note I took my 3 wood and just played one of those shots where you pray it comes off and it did, the ball flew the water and pitched the green finishing 12 feet away and I sunk the putt for a half to take it down the 19th hole which we halved.

Eventually I won the game on the 20th hole with a birdie and as we were shaking hands I took delight in telling him I'd beaten him on his shot hole and that if I ever have the misfortune to see him again I'd hope he'd have learned some manner because he is undoubtedly the biggest prat or come across on the course.

Theres gamesmanship and theres being an utter (insert favourite expletive). This seems more like the latter to me.

To say he actually expected to beat you is very arrogant. Looks like the golf gods were shining on this one though and justice prevailed :D

Well done, would of been easy to "lose it" so to speak

Everything he did would be fine with good mates in a bounce game.

In a match its a huge no-no and really poor show by him.

Well done on the win, tastes good doesn't it beating a golf git! Hope he learns some manners.

Great win, and very nice right up.

I have to say I would have given him some words at the end and told him exactly how I felt with all the coughs etc, gamesmanship is fine but when you start abusing etiquette you run into shaky ground.

Apologies for all typos in OP but on train and the iPhone keyboard can't keep up with my brain.

But if this had been a bounce game I agree it'd be a laugh and give and take but as you say in a match you just don't do it.

Nice write up. Shame some people feel the need to play the game in that way. You responded brilliantly. That was a victory to savour. One for the good guys. Well done.

Well done Fader. You are a bigger man than me and kudos for holding it together. I would have told him if his life is that sad and he really wants to win that badly I would be more than happy to shake on it now and hand him the match. He doesn't coach kids football as well does he? ;-)

Outstanding! I hate bad sportsmanship! Theres a difference between gamesmanship and just down right poor etiquette. Well done for giving the bloke a slap! Weve got a couple of these pratts at my place but ironically they are low handicappers!! They tried it on with me and my partner in a doubles match once and lets just say we nipped it in the bud on the first!! ;)

I wouldn't class that as gamesmanship, the guy was just being an arse.

Well done for beating him :)
I agree. The guy is a tool and someone else with a different temper would have just smacked him one!

Great write up, I was on the edge of my seat willing you to win!

Delighted the result went the right way, I don't know if I'd have been able to bite my tongue as long as you did!

A Good read, thanks for posting it.

I think I definetely would have had a fist pump of some sort when I won though!

Got my first every matchplay match coming up soon, so looking forward to experiencing this format.

Well done! Better to beat someone trying it on than just about anything else!

I'd have kept quiet on 16 until he'd picked his ball up though, then asked if he was conceding the hole because I'd not conceded the putt!

Great victory fella, nice one! I wouldn't have been aable to hold my tongue though. The guy sounds like an absolute clown. I would have revelled in telling him so too!
