I had my irons custom fitted over 5 years ago for my 21st ( pro watched me hit some balls and fitted me from there) and have self-fitted the rest of my clubs using a little bit of pro advice. I'm considering getting a full custom fitted set but I wondered how far you can take it and just where to go to get the best fit. I've not had a fitting using any computer systems before and I'm looking for a bit of advice on the following:

Do you have to decide what brand you want before you go for a fit?

If you have options on Brand for a driver, can they fit you for different non-stock shafts ie can you try out different shafts on different brands (project x etc)?

If they find a brand that suits for a driver can you still get fairway woods of a different brand fitted?

Where are the best places in the UK for getting fitted from Wedge (or possibly even putter) through to Driver?

If I do decide to buy a new set, what's the best way to sell my existing set baring in mind the irons are fitted to me?

Sorry if some of these questions seem quite basic but if I'm going to spend a lot of cash on this I'd like to get it right

Wide range of options.

If you go to a manufacturer's set up, e.g, at Mizuno or Callaway's main UK fitting centres, then that will be only for that brand. Ping, TM, Titleist also have UK fitting centres.

If you go to an independent fitting centre, there will be usually be a range of brands. These vary from large places like The Belfry to local pro shops which have a range of 'carts' containing components from a number of brands and you can usually get fitted for any or all, or a mixed bag of kit. These places usually offer the range of custom shafts approved by the manufacturers and which you can see on their brochures/online cataloguers. Pro shops will often do this fitting free of charge.

There are also specialist fitters who offer a range of brands and will fit any shaft or grip for you. These are places like Precision Golf or Golf Principles, and they will custom make a set for you with any shaft/grip available on the market, as well as tailor make the flex to suit you. They can also supply a wider range of clubs, including top end stuff such as Miura and Vega. These places usually charge a fee for the service.

Lastly, you have the big retail stores, AG, Direct Golf etc. I wouldn't recommend these. The citing is likely to be focussed towards brands they want to push and have in stock. Some legendary tales of bad fitting experiences from these places.

Putter fitting is a rarer offering. Precision Golf offer it, and I think you can go to Yes Golf and get fitted.

So it depends what you want and are prepared to spend. You can certainly get fitted for a whole range of different brands, and people often do.

What Ethan said!

I agree wholeheartedly, pay for a custom fit if you have to and get it right, it's worth it in the grand scheme of things. I've had American golf trying to sell me a driver i was trying out and advising me that there was no point in trying different shafts. When i said no, they offered to cut £40 off the price if i would take it there and then.

The independent fitters who charge a fee would be my choice, you get what you pay for!

I had a 'free' fitting with mizuno, got a badly fitted set with wrong shafts and heads for my game, cost me over £250 in having to trade them back in 3 weeks later and get a new proper set.

i went to a place where they used flightscope and it didnt cost me anything for the fitting..

I went with a budget and they showed me what sets i could get for that price and then i hit a load of balls with different irons and tried different shafts and then looked at the stats for each set to see which performed the best.

I went with the taylormade burner 2.0 irons and love em. Regular shafts but for me they were adjusted an inch longer. Each manufacturer is different, so a regular shaft from taylormade would be different to a regular shaft for say titleist.

I tried the AP1`s and need a heavier shaft yet my burners the stats shown that the regular shaft perfromed better than the stiff

Thanks for the advice :D. Does anyone know of any independent fitters in Scotland and if so what brands they work with?

theres a recommended guy in Edinburgh that Wull has been to, I'm going to go myself when the TM, Callaway and Mizuno drivers are out to get fitted

Golf Principles in Linlithgow and AGT in St Andrews.

GP quite new and based darn sarf (Basingstoke) so not sure about the Scottish branch. Heard many good and 1 bad report about AGT. Either way, try to get some sort of 'We'll put it right' warranty as the fitting session does not truly match reality - of a single swing.

I've used fitters in my area and been happy to recommend their process and results.
