Really frustrated at the moment. I am on a decent patch of form and really want to take the chance to try and get my handicap down. Having looked at the tee closures for September, however, there appears to be only 2 weekend comps and one of them has been re-arranged as it was cancelled earlier in the year due to bad weather. During most of September there are a few mid-week competitions which are no use to me as I work and an open competition but that is better ball so no point in entering that for a cut. Even over the bank holiday, the only competition was for President's Day and that was also better ball so my best round in ages cannot get me a cut. I had plenty of reasons to leave my old club (and I have no plans to go back) but to their credit there was at least one competition every weekend of the season and often 2 or 3 of differing formats over a Bank Holiday.

Bit of a mindless rant I know but the lack of competitions and chances to get a cut at the moment is really frustrating. Anyone have similar issues at their club? Is it fair for a member to expect at least one competition most weekends during the bulk of the golf season?

Supplementary cards.

10 allowed per year. One per week maximum.

There ya go.

I like supplementary cards and they allow you to try and maintain what you believe to be a fair handicap. However, as someone who got a decent cut earlier in the year through one, I would have much rather that came in a competition. Feels a lot easier to shoot lower when you're not in a comp and the tees/flags are potential a bit more kind.

I sympathise totally. Our club only has two weekend comps per month. One medal, one stableford, although no medals typically between November and March as the yellows are used.

Even then the old buffers in the clubhouse complain that there are too many comps as it means they can't go out in their usual fourballs on a saturday that they are free to go out in on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays etc etc....

Given that summer weekends can often be lost to holidays / weddings etc. You can be lucky to get one comp a month in the height of the golfing season. Its the one thing that I'd change at the club. For younger, working, competitive golfers there aren't enough comps at weekends. Tectonic plates move at a faster rate than our pro (who actually MAKES MONEY at running the weekend comps) so I don't expect anything to change.

That would frustrate me as well. The standard is 2 weekend comps and 2 midweek comps a month but we also have 2 day comps every bank holiday, the club champs and if you qualify (which I did) a 36 hole medal next weekend. If you are over 55 or have a handicap of 20+ we also have extra competitions but no extras for us young single figure handicappers ;) which I have inquired about and been told it's too much admin for the h'cap secretary (It will be bought up again, I'll do the admin myself if I have to :D).

Personally, I'm in the "would like a comp every weekend" camp, but I know I am in the minority at my club.

Over winter we have 1 weekend and 1 midweek stableford which is a touch annoying, especially since most of them were cancelled last winter due to the weather.

Supplementary's are definitely the way forward in your case.

There seems to be a big difference between the UK and Ireland. Every club here has a comp every weekend and most have comps on both Saturday and Sunday. My current club also has a open on Tuesday and a club comp on Wednesday so i have 4 comps to play every week.
We also use both Stableford and Medals as counting comps for handicaps. Over the last 4 years i have played 40,39,43 and 28 so far this year counting comps.
My mate played 79 counting comps last year.
Also every club here has a weekly open so i could play a counting comp every day of the week if I wanted. I just don't get handing in a supplementry card, can a Cat 1 do that.

I know the feeling, hitting really well at the moment, 3 cuts in the last 3 medals but only one more medal and i;m away that weekend.

Might have to get a few midweek rounds in at Moray old now i'm a country member.

what about opens can't you play any of those?

do you want to get back up to 10 then?

Feels a lot easier to shoot lower when you're not in a comp and the tees/flags are potential a bit more kind.

Our tees/pins are changed every few days, so there is no real competition difficulty added to the mix. There are only a few comps each year where pin positions would be considered in that way.

I suppose we are fortunate, there is a comp every weekend throughout the whole year, alternating Saturdays and Sundays, with a midweek comp throughout the season, with additional qualifying Monday club comps all year, not to mention the many other 'non regular' competitions.

What is the script with supplementary cards in scotland?

As far as I've been told:

1. Declare to club prior to playing that you wish to submit a supplementary card
2. Play your round with another member / approved person
3. Get your card signed and hand it in

Reductions and increases as normal.

10 cards allowed per year, only 1 in a week.

I think my club as a nice balance. There is a monthly medal and stableford each month (and a midweek one). There is normally at least one other competition during the month as well in the height of the season but there is also a couple of free weekends per month for a social game. I think its important that there is a chance to just go out and relax without a card and pencil in hand.
