Foursomes

Played first round of a club knockout comp this week and won in the second extra hole.

Anyway the format of the comp is foursomes. First time I have played it for over 20 years. Enjoyed it.

It is an incredibly difficult format. You can end up playing so few of the important scoring shots. For example I had a 10ft putt on the 11th green and then didn't have another putt of any kind until the first extra hole.

Anyone else play foursomes? How do you find it?

Play it and like it a lot. Many call it 'half a game' but I don't agree.

it's really hard to play it well as it requires both partners to come out of the blocks strongly from the off, and for the reasons you've highlighted, it can be hard to "keep in the zone" as often your own shots on any given hole are not at the sharp end of the scoring.

Agree that if given the choice then greensomes is the better of the two. We've a mixed greensomes comp this coming Bank Holiday that I'm really looking forward to.

I enjoy foursomes, it's the usual morning format in most scratch matches followed by singles in the afternoon.

Greensomes is nothing more than a society game played by chompers :fore:

I hate it!

TBH I thought I would. Maybe winning the match has helped, but it is definitely a new kind of challenge. We can certainly play much better as a team.

One of our most heavily supported and best loved comps is our Winter A/B Foursomes played October to March.

120 in the field, split-tee start where everyone is on the course within a 45 minute window, a brilliant Pro's raffle, clubhouse rammed to the rafters with the entire field for the presentation at 1pm.

What's not to like?

Love it. Beautiful, pure test of golf and nerve.

Don't mind greenrooms either, as log as it is a wind down after a decent lunch and a couple of nice bottles of wine.

We played a Greensome open comp today , it can be depressing to see your partner shank your perfect drive into a bunker :rofl:.

The wining score was 64.2, we scored 70 including 4 double bogeys, most shots were lost on slow bumpy greens except for HIS shank.

I absolutely love foresomes. Used to play a lot with my dad in a local interclub tournament, and we always did pretty well. It's such a good test of nerve, patience and concentration, and when you have a good round in foresomes it really does feel like you've had a good round.

I've never enjoyed it but have recently played it in a couple of scratch matches. It's a totally different experience at that level and with no shots being given! I might be a convert....

Our scratch 4somes league starts again 2morow, away to last years champions.

It's such a tough format, but then that is why I like it. I enjoy playing where the pressure is on every shot.

This league is a tough school, pars are a necessity to get a half and will regularly be losing the hole still.

Great format, love it.

Foursomes match is great and fair amount of pressure not as much as foursomes medal! that is intense. do enjoy it from time to time though.

I play in a family foursomes competition with my Dad, it's brilliant fun. Made it to the final once, and competing with my old manny is what makes golf brilliant

I played foursomes yesterday, I enjoy the format. I also play in a mixed interclub knockout foursomes competition which is great fun and very competitive. We also have a few mixed greensomes comps at the club, its a little bit more forgiving than foursomes.

Yeah no shots would be better We were giving away 7 shots, so it was pretty tough going. I think we might have to put some thought into it for the next round or develop some sort of strategy rather than just winging it. My partner decided who was teeing off on odds etc, which seemed logical beforehand but with hindsight I am not even sure we got that right.

Love love love foursomes, its a totally different game to what we play week in week out. We figured out pretty quick that deciding who took the odds and who took the even holes to drive made all the difference, not because of the tee shots per se, but the approaches. At ours whoever struck the opening drive would only be presented (all going well) with 4 or 5 approaches through the course, so the better iron/wedge player needed to go on the evens.

I like it as a format although it can be difficult getting into a rhythm.

The only downside is I don't get to play enough at the moment, so would rather play a full round than a half.
