Food & Drink During Round

Ice bath, no thanks theres a north easterly wind blowing here today and thats cold enough.

Pint of Tenants Ice Cold? Now we're talking! :D

C'mon guys snap out of it, it's a flipping 4 hour stroll around a field, even I can last without a few seeds 'n' a piece of fruit for that long and I'm 17 stone. Have a tea before you go out and a pint or two when you get back. I'm yet to stumble across a set of parched bones half way up the 18th.

I don't really know if it makes a discernable difference to my performance. I just know that I need to eat regularly including breakfasts now (I use to be terrible for skipping them) or my blood sugars start to go haywire. Its all about trying to maintain an equilibrium. I don't feel as tired playing the last few holes buts thats more to do with keeping the sugars stable than eating specifically to improve my golf

Porridge, bananas, nuts, wholemeal bread, peanut butter are all good things to eat before a round with plenty of water. Isotonic drinks need to be continuously replenished as they provide a short burst of energy. That's why marathon runners have them every five miles. Carbo gels are only for those without the luxury of time to eat them (like distance runners). You're best off sticking to bananas and energy bars during the round with plenty of water. If you want to follow through to proper post game meal wholewheat pasta with a fresh tomato sauce, lean meat (such as chicken), wholemeal bread would be ideal. Especially if you are planning another round.

Agree with Mike; although golf is not a marathon you can burn serious calories and should intake accordingly. Water should be OK as I doubt any of us burn hard enough to warrant isotonics. A good breakfast plus a banana or slow energy release food (like muesili bar) should work. Chocolate feels good but only 1 hole.

If like most mortals you've imbibed the night before (which would typically be a Sat so what the hell) then whatever breakfast makes you feel better and lots of H20 :) :) :)

I'm with Drawboy all the way here.

What discernable difference would be felt by an overweight middle aged man who uses his index finger to drive his trolley round a big field??

Does anyone believe that having a bananna on a Saturday morning will give you the extra energy when for the rest of the week your excercise involves watching OZ Aerobics??

Is a bottle of water and a Nutri Grain bar going to help the fact that you can't hit a cow's arse with a banjo??

Usually have a few bottles of cheap water in the bag and a multipack of whatever biscuit is on offer. Used to take Mars bars but the weather recently has made them into bricks. milky Ways seem to stay softer.

At county they tell us 3 500ml bottles of water a round and 2 bananas/ other slow releasing energy fruits. Also before you go out a meal based on a starchy food, pasta is the perfect choice. Whether you listen to this is up to you :D

jeez.. thanks for all the comments.

thought that this would only warrant a couple of replies.. must admit that I was from the can of coke & mars bar brigade, but this year am trying to take it to the next level..

looks like its bananas & water for me this season.

Instead of the can of Coke go for the litre bottle of vodka and instead of the Mars bar go with a Big Mac meal.........now thats taken things to new level :D

At least there are two of us sensible types on here Robobum, ooooo look it's supper time, muesli anyone, must keep up my strength.

I fill my bag with all kinds of stuff, most of it with no intention of eating that day/round
If I'm hungry, I open it up and see what's in there.....sometimes it'll be a Mars, sometimes muesli bar, sometimes a sandwich from last month......
It's all good.
On Sunday I was peckish and found a peanut bar thing and a few benson and hedges......ideal!!!

I admit to carrying a large bottle of water always and usually an ice cold fizzy drink for about halfway round.

I mostly try to get my eating done before I play. :)
