Evening all.

I've been given the opportunity to use a Flightscope to map how well (..... Or poorly :D ) I hit my clubs and bring a bit of science to the party to work out my distances.

What they say:

All sessions are carried out incorporating the use of "Flight Scope 3D Doppler Tracking Radar Technology". Consequently enabling us to offer a quite unique fitting experience allowing, analysis of varying product ranges to the greatest depth.

It measures:

Carry distance
Total distance
Shot dispersion
Launch angle
Spin rate
Spin axix, ( )
Peak height
Descent angle
Shot shape

Ask a silly question. What's the best way to use this facility?....And don't say hit balls!!?

..... And what should I be looking for within the stats I.E What = Good, What = Bad

Great piece of kit I had a session a few weeks ago, only knew what stats I was looking for on driver so good post and idea to find out before hand wish I had done bit more homework!
Enjoy!

I presume a trained person will be with you when you use this bit of kit? Or is somebody just lending it to you?

They are very good bits of kit, 2 primary uses. One is for clubfitting and the 2nd reason is as a training aid. You may for example want to work on a particular swing change such as angle of attack to increase/decrease spin rates and flightscopes are very useful for this sort of thing.

The numbers you will see need quite a bit of deciphering, there is no right or wrong measurement. Very much depends on each individual's swing.

Is this a favour someone's doing for you, or a service that anyone can pay for?

I'd love to do this if I found somewhere that offered it.

Personally, I'd hit balls until I hit 5 good ones with each club, asking for any that felt bad to be discarded, then work out the average for each club.

I'd also want to do the same with 9 iron down (or is that up) for 3/4 and 1/2 swings, and if I had time some see how much distance punch shots and fades took off.
Oh, and seeing what effect gripping down had.

I think I need to book it by the day, not the hour!

Service I'm paying for R3.......... well the missis is

£35 gets me an hour on the machine, with a chap to work it and as many balls as I need for the hour.

I went to a local course august time last year for new clubs. They used flight scope. 7 iron of a selection of clubs, then narrowed it down to the four you hit most consistently, then to the most consistent, which naturally were the most expensive.Did the same with drivers which they set up with different shafts, lofts, etc, it tracked me blocking one 77 yds right!

Just keep your eyes peeled for tornadoes.
Wonder when they bring out a doppler radar for your golf bag?
Might have a chance of finding some of my balls then!

I had a distance session with my coach about a month ago on a GC2 Launch monitor. Just checking the distances with each club and also check the distance gaps between each one as well. Really useful info.

But whilst he was off typing up the report he left me with the launch monitor and said I could have a play.

Was great fun.

Obviously had a few 'Wonder how far I could hit this club' swings. Actually quite a few :D

And done a wedge distance measurement by myself. Which he charges extra for. i.e. How far you hit each Wedge with full, 3/4 and 1/2 swings. Had a good idea of those numbers anyway, but confirmed what I thought.

Also was playing around with trying to shape it each way and hit high and low shots etc.

Real good fun.

If you have got a session on one go with an idea of what you want to do. I'd definitely recommend doing a distance measurement with each club and wedges if you have the time.

Is it inside or on a range?
Does he tweak your lofts as well? If for example your yardage gaps go 12, 12, 12, 15, 9, 12, 12?

Where is this if you don't mind me asking? If it's not too far I'd definitely consider going.

Was going to ask the same, would happily pay for a couple of hours on one

How about GM do an article with a few forum members ?

One does a lesson on one, one has a club fitting, one does a club distance session etc.

Then in the article they can explain the various uses of flightscope and what all the numbers mean ?

It's on a range Gary.

Well, the set-up is indoors (Machine and matts) then they open the doors out onto the out door range. A bit like Nikes' Oven..... Only without Tiger woods

The Flightscope is located at Stone driving range. Just looking on Google and it's about 75 miles from Leicester, so may be a little too far.

Here's the section on the website.
