I had a few hrs on flightscope today, bitterly cold but no wind,
my ss has dropped to 102-105 ish and carry was 210-230 with a 5 yd roll out,

Man did these figs depress me yet I was hitting them extremely well with 6 to 6.9 secs air time and tight dispersion.

Spin was too high avg 3500 and launch was also too high IMO avg 13.5.
need spin and launch to come down which will optimise smash factor and increase distance apparently.

This was with R11, Cobra and Alpha heads and numerous shafts incl tour versions. Roll on Summer right enough.

Just thought I'd share because if that was during a round I would have said my driving was very good today (albeit a bit high) with either straight shots or soft draw, and if someone had said I'd averaged about 225-230yds I'd have laughed in their face.:(

Summer and non range balls will increase a lot of these numbers but its food for thought

Is it really that bad to know your swing speed and distance. Its still you swiniging the club the same person it was yesterday and the same person it will be tomorrow....I would love to have a session to know the truth.......

At least then I could officially join the 300 club ..........

We played today in some cold winds that were grating us on an inland links course. Wind against 200yrd max, wind with, 300+

I'm looking forward to my fitting tomorrow just to get some hard facts!, it's going to be a wake up call I know it

Sometimes I think these can be bad things to use. Whilst I accept its great to know swing speed, launch angle spin rates, etc if you are going onto the course and getting it round these numbers don't actually make a difference. Certainly if you are looking at swapping clubs or going for a C/F then of course you need to know the data but I'd rather just get it onthe short stuff and play. It's winter still, the air is cold and its windy so I'd say the manhood doesn't need protecting and that your're hitting it ok

The one thing i would love to know is my carry distance forget everything else but to me that is the most important thing.....mind you it carry distance doesnt matter when you top it...

this is great for people to know how far they are hitting each club and what to expect. you would be surprised how much your performance changes in the last year i hit balls much more consistent but i have lost some range and something like that can tell me just how much because i was struggling with club choice on the course for a long while

I know my distance has dropped a fair bit in the last few years but I accept its an age thing. Thankfully the h'cap hasn't budged more than a couple of 0.1's in that time.

Its about the score at the end of the day.....

according to the fitter if we can find the correct shaft his software was saying an optimized swing (launch down, spin down and smash factor up) will add 30yds onto that carry, then again he did say I was hitting it pretty good and it will be hard to optimize unless we find the right shaft.

Darths search for his shaft.....................continues:smirk:

Good luck in your search. Everything I've tried so far this year has only given me a minor improvement on length and dispersion. Certainly not enough to justify laying out over £300 on. Think I'm gonna stick with the S9 pro and spend some money on spivvy gear so that at the very least I'll look good while nailing another 260 yarder into the left rough.

the same applied to when i was doing a lot of trackdays.i had a laptimer but never bothered fitting it because i always felt it would make me try even harder and or put the downers on things if i was not doing the laptimes i thought i was doing or capable of.

regardless of what the machine says your swing is what it is.....nothing will change except for the shaft you get fitted for and this itself will improve the numbers.the most important thing is to gain accuracy and some yards.....gain what is achievable, gain whats possible and then hopefully see your scores come down.

I'm beginning to think Bluewolf that there are obvious bad shafts for certain people ie they balloon or feel dead etc etc but the ones that you get 5 shots out of 10 good and the other 5 shots poor but not disastrous seem more common. I tried some really varied shafts today incl a prototype low low spinner

Bluewolf - which s9 pro have you got? d or s? I've got an s in 9.5 degrees with the stiff matrix shaft. The clubhead and shaft combo is supposed to lower spin and height - had a zl which went high and lost distance, the s9 keeps it on a nice rainbow flight with the same carry but no where near the height with plenty of run out.
Try a the shafts and heads and good luck - the right one makes a big difference as you know. Can suggest the s9 pro s is shallow and d is a deeper face I think the s is a lower spin rate. 'Bout 70 bob on ebay.

When I played the other day I hit some mahoooooooosive drives and was a grand total of 30yds further than a chopper off 24.

His were low hooking 190 worm burners that mustered 40yds of skid at the end and mine were 260 carries that plugged within a foot (I hate Winter golf on parkland courses), I'd take mine any day... that low launch crap is for choppers.

EDIT: I did post my 'average' Winter yardages for a single round in a previous thread and with duffs it came out about 237yds I think?? Summer ones would be longer as everything would roll out a lot more.

1. First may I ask what Flightscope is. I'm guessing it's an electronic swing assessment devise.
2. Re. the above comment about a fellow golfer. I think I've seen somebody like you on the golf course. Ah well! It used to be a game for 'gentlemen'.

I'd agree about the spin but launch actually seems fine (for distance) and perhaps just a tad than optimum.

According to the gadget Flightscope provide, you could launch up to 18* on those numbers (had to assume a couple) and not lose any carry. Similar;y, there's no/negligible loss of carry distance between 13 and 18 if spin comes to 2600.

I believe the Range Balls are having a distinctly adverse effect! Smash Factor of 1.3 to 1.4 would explain figures (130-140 ball speed)

To use range balls for this sort of exercise, except as demo, is completely daft imo! Only serves to confuse the picture of your swing.
