Yes, but the EU would have banned fish and chips in newspaper had not the government already done so.
EU wanted to ban mushy peas.
Fish would need to be described with their Latin names.
Bendy bananas, bent carrots, and Brussels sprouts also came under scrutiny.

I also suspect the EU did look closely at the salt, the vinegar and the batter that goes into fish and chips.
They all but destroyed our fishing industry.
Our great fishing ports had to cut back on trawlers going to sea.
Trawlers tied up in Peterhead and Grimsby.
Even Whitby had to source its cod from Iceland.
Cod and other long frozen white fish also comes from Alaska.
No wonder over 90% of the fishing industry voted to leave the EU.
Fact remains that Britain is an island and fish is our staple diet.
Not Indian, Chinese or other exotic food, but fish.

It’s the chips I see the biggest change, nowadays they’re all sourced from farmed stock and will never know what it is to spend their days in the wild with their own kind (ridiculously easy to catch too compared to those slippery fish, don’t even need a net) :cry:
 
So me and Missis T have had a couple of days in Goathland, Robin Hoods bay, Whitby and last minute call into Scarborough on the way home. From what I have seen there’s not many chippys gonna close soon. I said to Missis T on the way up “ I am having fish and chips”. I had them in our hotel last night and I mentioned I hope the batter is crispy. Lordy Lordy £10.95 later and I have had a fantastic Cod chips, mushy peas and salad. It was everything I expected.
On our way back today we called into Scarborough. Before we left Missis T said she fancies a fish. Not bothered about chips as she is watching her weight and lost 2 stones since Xmas. I never fancied owt but said I would share hers. She bought a large Haddock and it was massive and crispy. £6.30, ?. As we crossed the rd to the neach, the fun started. I cut a 5” piece off and started eating it. At that point it felt like some *** was playing drums on my head. I ducked down and saw out of the corner of my eye this bloody great seagull flying off. I looked at Missis T who was in bits laughing with her hands over her fish which was in a box. I still had hold of my fish. Some thieving gull thought he is having my supper and Tash was having none of it. Anyway todays fish was gorgeous and as good as yesterdays.

Oh ah, whilst in the hotel last night, if you fancied it you could Have a full lobster with trimmings for £20. Yet it is something I have never fancied.

Oh the nostalgia, remember the good old days when Britain ruled the waves? Our intrepid explorers could traverse the globe and bring back the bounty for good queen Bess. Starting opium wars, promoting slavery and robbing from the pesky Europeans who dared to sail their own ships on the high seas.
 
A cone of chips is £2.60 at a chippy near me. All of the other chip shops in the area have put their prices up to £1.60/£180.
I can't help but feel that many businesses are just jumping on the bandwagon and hiking prices over and above what they need to. Pure greed imo

Unless you know the operating costs of said businesses I’m not sure that’s an assertion that can be made. Cost of raw materials has jumped significantly, cost of energy for businesses is still ridiculously high (relative to domestic) and potentially staff asking for cost of living increases in their wages.

Should the business just take that hit to its turnover so that it doesn’t appear like greed to the myopic eye?

If you use that logic of bandwagons then we could say that public service providers jumping on the “inflation level pay rise or we’ll strike” bandwagon is pure greed. Inflation is transient, what happens when inflation drops, do they take a pay cut?

The whole argument is flawed and it’s unfair to suggest that businesses that are probably struggling are being greedy by charging you more for your luxury of chips.

IMO, of course.
