• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

First supplementary card.

I'm not seeking to turn this into a slanging match but surely a club has a responsibility to inform members that changes to the CONGU handicap system offer opportunities not previously available. You cannot expect members to request a facility if you refuse to let them know it's available. You cannot expect your members to always be checking the CONGU website to find out things the club should be telling their members.

Far from it and I think it's an interesting debate. You are of course right in that clubs should offer the facility and mine is remiss in that for not doing so. I suppose my point is that when it was introduced it was purely to enable players to keep an active handicap. At that time, any club offering a full competition calendar really wouldn't need them and the idea didn't "take off" at our club.......nobody, committee, or players could really see the point given we have 70/80 qualifiers a year including the seniors. So when the rules changed at the last revision we already had 4 years of basically ignoring them, nobody was clamoring to introduce them so nothing happened. The situation has arisen out of inaction due to no demand. Players do talk to folk from other clubs and if these were seen as a brilliant idea I'm pretty sure word would get round and players would be asking why we don't do them. They haven't, which I really think is a reflection on how much they are actually used or needed. No doubt it's horses for courses and so on and I'm sure it works well at some clubs and some clubs need them more than others but I'd be surprised if that's a majority of normal members clubs.

the thing I notice about my new club is that they have obvious competition pin positions. they seem to use pin placement as a means of protecting the course as its not the longest in the world.

I find they tend to hand the pins at the side of the greens which have little raises. if you go pin hunting and miss, it leaves a very very tricky up and down.

if you do a supplementary card on a non comp day, you might well find the pins in easier spots therefore it is easier to score!

at the same time this difference wont be something silly like 5 shots.
