Would you be annoyed and what would you do if......

We had our pros competition day on Saturday. It was a 7/8 handicap stableford comp. it was a glorious day with no winter rules in place, off the back tee's. I got to the putting green for some practice and there was a whole load of people complaining that it was a none qualifying.... Our competition committee had made this decision. Am not sure why, maybe because of he 7/8th, but I don't know.
So we went out, enjoyed the game and in most cases attacked every putt and green (greens were rapid by the way). Any how, my mate text me this morning and the committee has changed their minds and made it a h/c counting comp after it had finished. I made the buffer (just), but I think there will be a few complaints!

It can't be a qualifier unless it was played off of full handicap, which it wasn't. As soon as they tell everyone to play off 7/8ths handicap, it's a non-qualifier and they can't change that after the event. Someone needs to have a word with them.

I think there are a few people who are more than upset.... Can they now change it back?!? What about hose people who got nice cuts? They will be fumin as well now! Spring medal next week... Can't argue with that!

I cant wait until some of the committee/rules boffs on here see this :)

Unbelievable that anybody could think that this was allowed never mind a full committee!!

It's not a case of having to change it back, they can't change it in the first place. Competitiors have to be told of the status of the competition prior to play and it can't subsequently be changed. You were told it was a non-qualaifier, therefore, it's a non-qualifier. Second as I said previously, it could only ever be a qualifier if it was played off of full handicap, which it wasn't.

I know you aren't affected but fo rthe sake of integrity, you should really flag these points to the committee.

OK – so here’s a scenario for the OP’s Competition Committee to consider:

A 24-handicapper - playing off 21 as it’s 7/8 – misses putts for 1 point on SI 4, 5 and 6 and lifts the ball. Does the committee – having now declared the comp a qualifier which must be off full handicap – assume that he would have sunk the next putt for 1 point or just tell him hard luck?

My my watch, these points will have already been made by 9.02 am this morning. I agree with your points and that the comp should never have been changed!

I knew Rosecott would be able to distill this into a couple of lines

A committee cannot change a competition from a non-qualifier to a qualifier once the first person has tee'd off.
They can, however, change it the otherway at anytime during, or indeed after, a competition. An example of this is if the course had been shortened and no one had informed the committee of this.

As for the OP's dilema, the original competition is in place, the qualifying change does not have any standing and any handicap adjustments that have happened must be reverted to the original ones. The only exception I could see is if a bandit won with a fantastic score then the committee could use that as a general play cut.

Karl - a letter to the committee should do the job but I assume someone has spotted the error and is in the process of changing the results.
