Went for my first custom fitting tonight for a new set of irons.

I apologise in advance for the lack of technical information, my head was spinning by the end.

Started off swinging my 8 iron to get loosened up, a couple of minor shanks…

Was then measured for length, standard.

A few swings with the Mizuno swing DNA and an MP-54 head, a couple of shanks thrown into the mix for good measure, it suggested three shafts, sorry I can’t remember what they were.

Started with the MP-54 and it looked beautiful but the head felt small and with the poor shots I was making it didn’t inspire confidence, I hit several more shanks and they became a feature of the whole session.

I then tried several clubs in succession and again I can’t remember yardages and details but a summary is as below:

Ping i25, nice when hit out the middle but that wasn't very often, nothing stand-out

TaylorMade Speedblade, good results but didn’t feel nice off the face

Titleist AP1, good results but the club felt somehow heavy

Mizuno EZ Forged, more like the head size of my MX-23s, results were very consistent, averaging just over 160 carry on the 6 iron, which was similar to the MP-54 although there were more mis-hits with the latter

MP-54 again now that I was swinging a bit more freely, better results but I felt I was having to steer it to not hit a shank

While this was going on we were trying different shafts and the KBS gave the best results, sorry again, I can’t remember launch angle and spin rates, or even flex! I think it was stiff.

So we came down to two clubs and it was a battle between head and heart:
The EZ Forged is never going to win a beauty contest but I felt much more confident hitting it
The MP-54 looked stunning but didn’t give me the same confidence looking down.

A bit of switching between one and then the other and battle was won, by the head.

Measured for lie with the EZ Forged and again was standard, so much for custom fitting!

Grip was +2.

Perhaps not the result I wanted and I’ve got a feeling I’m going to hate myself for passing over the MP-54s but I don’t think I’ll regret it.

Well, at least you know that 'Standard' works for you!

And is there any real need to change? MX23s (and 25s) are excellent clubs for any level.

I know a 4-capper still using the 23s he got (fitted for) as a 22-capper. Would be hard to argue with his view that they were/are good enough to get him to that level, so no need to change - until they are worn out!

I don't see a huge distance between the cast and the forged apart from the deeper cavity on the cast. Did you not fancy a little more forgiveness?

Also, the EZs have a stronger loft (slightly) so you should naturally see your yardages increased.

Did you notice a very big difference by changing the shafts?

There's a big difference in offset between the 2 clubs.
Having played with Nick he doesn't strike me as a player that needs the large SGI offset similar to, say, Ping G series. There's a bit of offset on the forged club but not excessive amounts.
Looks do play a part..

Those EZ Forged will do you well Nick.
As has been said, not dissimilar to your 23's - a bit more modern and with a bit of Tech to help you out.
Good luck with 'em!

When do you get them?

Shaft changes didn't make a massive difference feel-wise but on the monitor you could see the differnce in launch and spin rates.

I'm still in a bit of a quandary over my choice, been thinking overnight and I think I might nip down to see the fitter again, I can't remember if I hit the JPX 825 Pro, this seems to have a similar spec to the EZ but will appeal to my eye more.

I thought that as well, I had a go with the i25 yesterday on the practise ground and I couldn't tell much difference from them and my callaway x 18's, I do like the look of the club at address. Quite disappointed after all the hype.

I'm sure Mark Crossfield plays with the EZ forged irons. And he says never mind the looks, feel the performance.

Hope there's somebody there when you arrive ;)

How embarassing was that? Good job nobody was around to see me.

I hit the JPX 825 pro last summer and to be honest they were good but I didn't really get any difference in the length and had a wider dispersion. Lovely feel and quite forgiving

If they're anywhere near as forgiving as the EX Forged then they'll be the ones.

Where did you go for te fitting Nick?

The indoor golf centre at Burbage, a wide range of manufacturers to try and the GC2 monitor is pretty good.

Are the 'Shermans' a regular feature of your game? If so would it not be better to get that sorted out before deciding on new clubs? I only say this as I can imagine how disappointing it would be to spend the money and still hit that horrible shot from your new clubs.

They come and go, I've worked with the Pro to try and sort it and of late they've been a rare occurence.

The funny thing is I get them the worst whenever I'm having a lesson. The biggest cause for me is not turning through properly which forces my arms out and the club presents to the ball slighlty open and hosel first.

Yeah, but they've got two big orange stickers on the back.;)

I know where you are coming from. Don't know why Mizuno went for orange - Mizuno colour has to be blue! JPX Pros are a lovely looking club and are the natural successors to the MX 23/25/200/300 line.

I hit the Callaway x hot pro irons the other night and absolutely loved them. They had the Project x 5.5 flighted shafts fitted and when i was at address the smaller head and little offset looked fantastic. Ive just swapped my G25s from stiff to regular but for some strange reason ive always wanted to own a set of Mizuno irons. My local pro is getting in the JPX825 pro with the project x shaft for me to try and im worried im going to lose more money by having to sell the Pings again to buy the Mizuno.
