Last Sunday I went to the Mizuno national fitting center in New Malden to have a fitting for a set of MX200's. I was somewhat surprise at the results as the recommendation was for graphite shafts.

My club swing speed was low, I averaged 70mph with all the clubs I tried but the graphite shafts gave better and consistent ball speed, carry etc.

Another benefit for me was I didn't get a 'jarring' through my shoulder when I struck the ball (I've had my collar bone plated in my left shoulder).

So I know its not macho judging by previous comments but I'm getting the MX200's with the graphite shafts and it will be interesting how I get on once I've bedded them in ...... and no I wont be playing from the red tee's

Anyone else out there use graphite shafts on their irons?

I have firm flex graphite shafts on my Callaway X16 irons, bought in 2003 and custom fitted. My swing speed then was just over 100 mph. They suit me fine, although if I was to replace them I would go back to steel shafts.

Interesting comments, I'll see how I get along with them before judging them.

It was just the shock of the low club head speed, hopefully plenty of playing will improve it.

Chrimbo, whatever they recommend is what you should go with. If they advised me to use a shaft made from stiffened rubber then I would use it.....well maybe not.

Seriously though, I got fitted by the Mizuno fitting centre in Wrexham and they advised the stiff shaft S300 (swing speed was averaging 87mph). Although I really wanted the MP-52's they said that the stats were 'shouting out' towards the MX-200's and guess what after weeks of using them they were right (although I havent used the MP-52 for a round so cant really compare). I have been very pleased with my MX-200's and sure that you will be too. Also if they give you a sweeter and less painful strike then all is good.

I have a very quick swing in terms of tempo and have graphites in my TM tour burners. I've got a lot more distance and control and having tried an MX200 demo 6 iron in steel the other day found it very difficult to hit now I'm use to the graphite.

My current set are steel but my wife brought some Yonex Irons yesterday and naturally I had a go and I was really impressed how nice they were, now I am considering seeing if I can get away with some graphite irons.

t.b.h. reading your post, I'd say use what suits you best!

If you get better and start generating more speed, the graphites are still going to be OK for you.

I can hit my nipper's graphite clubs perfectly well and they are suited to a junior golfer.

Good Luck

My Yonex's have graphite shafts, but I can't say whether steel is better for me as I've not tried any others. Don't know what my swing speed is, but when I take delivery of my launch monitor gadget I might find out. ;)

My first set were callaway x16s with graphite shafts - didnt get as much distance bu were light and good for me when i was a beginner - theyre good for elderly people, people with muscle/joint problems like yourself and LADIES lol only messin ye
