Howdy folks,

Getting excited now, first Club Championships this weekend, I tee off at 10.40 Saturday and I hope a little later on Sunday ;)
It will be my first 36 hole comp so any tips specifically for this format?

Apart from one shot at a time! Any experiences where you did well one day and badly the second or visa versa and if so what you could have done to avoid that. That sort of thing.

Play conservatively the first round. You cant win it on day one but you certainly can lose it. Relax, play your shots and enjoy it, its still only a round of golf, good or bad!

Don't do anything different from a normal round.

You see so many people warming up on the range pre big comps, when normally they would rock up, 1practice swing and away you go!
Same with how they are out on the course.....normal routine = quick look, pick club, steady aim fire!!! Club champs and they are throwing grass about and striding out 20 different yardages and other general mincing about!!

Good luck by the way. Enjoy it :)

Interesting, thanks Chris, didn't think of it like that I see what you mean.

Cheers Robobum, I wouldnt do that anyway, pretty quick player dont believe in over-deliberating. By the way sorry about your real bum but the robotic one sounds ace.

you can have a really rotten hole, but there is twice as long to make it back, and twice as long for everyone else to have a rotten hole or 2. Most people play badly over 2 rounds, so dont NR in the first round because you are having one bad hole

Good luck, enjoy

just roll up and play your normal game minus lunatic playing partner! :)
its just another 2 rounds that said its wise to play percentage shots early on (as chrisd mentioned) and dont gamble early so easy to attempt a glory shot and rack up a big score no bother in stableford its just a blob but 36 hole medal they all count.
Most of all enjoy!!

Cool thanks lads, yeah will be interesting to play with people off the same h/c as myself, good advice about not going for broke early and playing steadily will def keep that in mind

believe that you can win. just cos its your first go, don't think you're turning up just for the experience.

someone's going to win, believe it can be you...

I like it, what sort of scores usually win these things? Obviously won't be winning the gross (there's a guy off +4 who ruins it for everyone ;) ) but over the two days would you expect the places to be much under nett?

Remember we don't do it for a living, so have fun. As for nerves; ask everyone else and you'll find they are all nervous to a greater or lesser extent.

Back to work Monday - life goes on.

have fun and enjoy it. Not often we get to play over more than one round. Just play it like any other medal round, except remember there is always another round to play. So if you blow it out of your arse first round and find yourself 3 over, just think about the time when you got round in the mid 70's and go and do it. Like has been said already chances are everyone will play badly at some point over the 36 holes.

It will depend on h/cap restrictions and what score would normal win a medal? X2 as its 36 holes but also a little bit less under maybe? :)

Our 36 hole Trophy comp was played last weekend and was won with 2 rounds of about nett 68 (cant remember exactly). As usual the 1st day leader on nett 65 blew up as did most that were in contention as they had all night to think about their chances.

Play it like any other medal. Do whatever you do any other week. The holes may be on trick spots on the green so try and get a good look around the hole and if you play for the heart of every green then you'll never be far away.

Make sure and come on after and let us know how ye get on.

Gonna enter ours this year for the first time as have missed it due to other commitments the past 2 years.

make sure you sign your card and get witnesses when you hand it in, if you have a camera phone take a photo aswell (you may get frowned upon for using a phone in the clubhouse though)

in all seriousness just enjoy it. No pressure, play your normal game and if its your day/s then jobs a good un

Make sure you practice first. I played in my first ever club championship 4 weeks ago, and i am now in the semi final. Just enjoy yourself. If you have a bad hole, try and forget about it, its only a game of golf. Oh and pack your waterproofs. lol

Munro - Ha ha, theyre never out of the bag this year chap!

G1bbo sounds like you have a tale to tell, no I won't forget to sign etc, always extra careful about that.

Sure things Slicer, as you're the man who saved my putting I'll send you a PM

Chaps - thanks for the tips, thats good to know that over 36 a blow up is likely so to put it behind me and trust that most everyone else will have one too, also if I do manage a good round not to stay awake all night thinking of my winners walk, sounds like an invitation to self-destruction. Oh and I'll try to stay sober but I have a long history of being very easily lead ;)

Got my first major comp this weekend too. Captains weekend 36 hole medal over Saturday and Sunday. I will be honest im bricking it a bit! Getting announced onto the tee and all that is gonna send my legs to jelly. Ive told myself im gonna hit a wall at some point in 36 holes but just stay calm and dont get too angry with myself! :)

P.S Hope all my gear dries out from today as its soaking!
