First Cars.

2005 Mitsubishi Colt 1L in red.

Super cheap to service and run, above 50mpg!

Never once broke down in its 10 years of running.

First owned entirely by me and not borrowed from family was around 1993 - a Ford Fiesta van, red, ex Fire Brigade with livery painted out. £800. Cant remember engine size or year/reg but prob 1100cc and at least 5yo. OK runner and cheap to run. Bought from a workmate and had lots of Halfords 'extras' on it which were fairly naff I recall. The freedom though!
Sold it at auction before going off to Oz backpacking.

Uncanny, as per OP my first was also a 1972 MK3 Cortina 1.3L. Mine was an estate. Big thing with a 1.3 OHV engine. Maroon. Loved it. Wish I had kept it. Bought it for £300 and sold it some time later for £200. EKH 387L

After the mini I got a maroon Ford 105E with a yellow stripe from front to back. Went like the proverbial off a shovel. Essential accessory was a hammer to knock the starter motor back in place as it constantly fell out of position.

70's Toyota 1000 which I had for 10 mins before jumping it over a hedge into someones garden (the first car I had all four wheels off the ground, but thankfully not a common theme). Regained consciousness and noticed the gear lever was in the back seat. Lucky.

I started with a 900cc E reg fiesta.
Bought off my sister. I real learnt how to "drive" in that car. The need to maintain momentum, judge the choke position, the very fact it had a choke makes my younger colleagues think I must be ancient (once I've explained what one is).
Awful car, but I really enjoyed it

1937 Ford 8. (?Y Type) I'll dig out a picture later.

8 for 8 HP. No brakes to speak of - they weren't hydraulic or cable, they were rods with threaded adjusters.

3 speed gearbox with (woo !!!!) syncromesh between 2nd and 3rd. With no brakes to speak of you had to know how to double de-clutch into 1st to slow down. And before the usual suspects comment, no I wasn't around when it was built. Cost me £15 from my brother and sold it for £10 a year or so later for banger racing or something.

2nd car a 1947 Rover 14. Lovely car with so many features that are now coming back into fashion again.

3rd car Austin A35 van. Great for carting stuff around for gigs. Suped it up a bit and kept breaking half shafts.......

4th was a Morris Minor split windscreen model with original side valve engine. Soon changed that engine replacing it with an 1100cc. Twin choke Weber. Axle tramp that you wouldn't believe. Oh, and more half shafts ....

1st company car was a hand me down Ford Anglia 105E that had been "run in" by my boss for 15,000 miles and never been above 60mph. I remember travelling up the M1 to the Manchester area for our Easter Lacrosse tour, 4 up, and getting valve bounce on some downhill stretches. Speedo was bouncing off the needle at 100 mph but we were probably only doing 80ish mph????

You could always tell when someone was starting up an old Ford Anglia, the clang clang clank noise coming from the fly ring.

A VW Beetle @ £120. Not sure of its age but it was a 6 volt version. When you switched the lights on it actually went darker. A few weeks after I bought it I did an emergency stop at a zebra, and both headlights fell out. It went through a pint of oil a month, and I had to take out the interior heating as it filled the car with exhaust fumes.

I ran it for a year no problem....apart from the above, and then sold it for £60.

My next car being a Dolomite Sprint, which I parked, backwards, in a fence at 70mph.

Same as that!
Mine was a 12v '63 Beetle 1200, reg 760GHO, which also filled with fumes when the heater was on!
It was my first car, although I had to share it with my brother and sister ............... it was £60 and went by the name of Oscar!
