Fyldewhite
Tour Winner
1978 Mk2 Escort. 1.6, 4 door sort of sandy mud colour. Tended to overheat in summer.
1976 Capri 1.6. Strange gold colour with a brown vinyl roof. Passed my test in it.
1937 Ford 8. (?Y Type) I'll dig out a picture later.
8 for 8 HP. No brakes to speak of - they weren't hydraulic or cable, they were rods with threaded adjusters.
3 speed gearbox with (woo !!!!) syncromesh between 2nd and 3rd. With no brakes to speak of you had to know how to double de-clutch into 1st to slow down. And before the usual suspects comment, no I wasn't around when it was built. Cost me £15 from my brother and sold it for £10 a year or so later for banger racing or something.
2nd car a 1947 Rover 14. Lovely car with so many features that are now coming back into fashion again.
3rd car Austin A35 van. Great for carting stuff around for gigs. Suped it up a bit and kept breaking half shafts.......
4th was a Morris Minor split windscreen model with original side valve engine. Soon changed that engine replacing it with an 1100cc. Twin choke Weber. Axle tramp that you wouldn't believe. Oh, and more half shafts ....
1st company car was a hand me down Ford Anglia 105E that had been "run in" by my boss for 15,000 miles and never been above 60mph. I remember travelling up the M1 to the Manchester area for our Easter Lacrosse tour, 4 up, and getting valve bounce on some downhill stretches. Speedo was bouncing off the needle at 100 mph but we were probably only doing 80ish mph????
A VW Beetle @ £120. Not sure of its age but it was a 6 volt version. When you switched the lights on it actually went darker. A few weeks after I bought it I did an emergency stop at a zebra, and both headlights fell out. It went through a pint of oil a month, and I had to take out the interior heating as it filled the car with exhaust fumes.
I ran it for a year no problem....apart from the above, and then sold it for £60.
My next car being a Dolomite Sprint, which I parked, backwards, in a fence at 70mph.
